Hearth, Inc. - ending elder homelessness

Hearth, Inc. - ending elder homelessness Hearth is dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. We house, prevent, and/or stabilize housing for individuals over 50.

We manage 228 units of permanent supportive housing and an Outreach program, which helps over 250 elders each year to find and succeed in housing of their own. Recently we partnered with the Corporation for Supportive Housing to create a National Initiative to End Elder Homelessness.

Older adult homelessness doesn't take a season off, and nationally, it's on the rise.

According to HUD's 2025 Point-in-Time data, homelessness among adults 65 and older rose 6.8% nationally. Here in Boston, nearly 25% of our homeless population is already age 55 or older - often after rising housing costs or one unexpected expense turned stability into crisis.

That's why Hearth's Prevention team works year-round to help older adults stay housed before a crisis becomes homelessness.

If you or someone you know age 50+ is struggling to keep their home, Hearth may be able to help.

Housing. Outreach. Prevention. Together, they're how we help older adults find, and stay, home.

Not all housing is the same, and for older adults facing homelessness, the difference determines whether stability lasts. Shelter offers a bed for the night. Permanent supportive housing offers something else: a lease with no end date, paired with case management and healthcare coordination.

That combination is what moves someone from surviving to living, and it is the model our mission is built around.

August feels like an ending to most of us. Backpacks in the windows, one more weekend at the beach, the light going earlier. For an older adult sleeping outside, August feels like a countdown. We're starting now on the homes people will move into this November. That work is already underway.

Shelters offer a bed for the night. Permanent supportive housing offers a lease with your name on it.

Permanent supportive housing at Hearth pairs stable housing with on-site case management and healthcare coordination, so residents stay housed for good and can age with dignity and respect—without worrying about where they're going next.

In her July CEO Corner, Hearth President and CEO Rhonda Pieroni reflects on what independence really means for older adults who have experienced homelessness. It is a locked door, a kitchen of one's own, and a schedule no one else controls. Read more about the continuum of care that makes it possible: https://hearth-home.org/what-independence-really-means/
