National Asian Pacific American Museum Commission dedicated to honoring the achievements, progress, and lasting impact of Asian Pacific Americans.

Established by the 117th Congress, the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture is charged with delivering to the President and Congress a comprehensive plan of action that will lay the groundwork for Congressional authorization of a museum in Washington, D.C. In April, Commissioners Chiling Tong, Joanne Kwong, and Joseph Cao hosted a listening session in Houston at the Asia Society Texas Center.

Houston is home to one of the most ethnically diverse Asian American communities in the country—including Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and more—and that richness was reflected in the conversation in Texas. Participants emphasized the importance of ensuring a future national Asian Pacific American museum captures the full diversity of our community's experiences, particularly the distinct histories and voices represented in the South.

On April 2, Commission Co-Vice Chair Joanne Kwong and Executive Director Krystal Ka‘ai Hetherington led our Hawai‘i Regional Convening and Listening Session, held at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Thank you to all the community leaders who shared their perspectives on preserving cultural heritage, addressing historical erasure, and ensuring a future museum authentically reflects the diversity and complexity of APA communities in the U.S., especially Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
