College is full of new experiences, new people, and new social situations. Knowing the facts can help you make informed decisions and look out for yourself and your friends.

Did you know? In one study, approximately 1 in 13 college students reported that they had been — or suspected they had been — drugged without their knowledge.

Drink spiking can involve adding drugs or extra alcohol to someone’s drink without their knowledge or consent. Scroll to learn practical tips college students can keep in mind to help protect their drinks and stay safe.

Are you or a loved one heading to college? Save this post and share it with a college student heading to campus this fall. 💙

Here are a few practical tips to keep in mind:
✨ Walk with purpose. Know your surroundings and where the blue-light emergency phones are located.
✨ Stick together. Travel in groups.
✨ Make a party plan and stick to it. Don’t leave a friend at a party and don’t leave a party alone.
✨ Choose your people wisely. Take your time getting to know new friends.
✨ Stay aware. Pay attention to what’s happening around you.

Most importantly, trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to that feeling. Stay confident, stay aware, and trust yourself.

Visit VTMF.org for additional educational tools and self-defense training designed to build confidence, awareness, and preparedness. 🦋

As you head to college, knowing your boundaries is an important part of staying safe and looking out for yourself and others. 💙

Think of a boundary as an invisible line. On one side is what feels comfortable and safe. On the other is what feels uncomfortable or not okay.

Everyone’s line is different. Knowing where your line is—and recognizing when someone crosses it—can help you make safer choices, speak up, and trust your instincts.

At the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation, we believe awareness is an important part of prevention. Know your boundaries. Respect others’ boundaries. And trust yourself when something doesn’t feel right.

College is a time to learn, grow, and find your community — and every student deserves to feel safe while doing it.

Let’s spotlight some statistics that prove this is an issue:
✨ 26% of college women experience sexual assault.
✨ 50% occur in August, September, October or November.
✨ 90% of campus sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows.

These numbers remind us why safety preparedness and education matter.

This week, the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation will be sharing practical safety tips & skills to help students feel more confident, prepared, and empowered.

August 7th marks the day that we lost Vanessa.

At just 27 years old, her life was taken in a random act of violence. We continue to mourn her loss while honoring the way she lived—with kindness, curiosity, compassion, and a deep love for others.

The Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation was created to carry her legacy forward by empowering people with personal safety and violence prevention skills. Every training delivered, every conversation started, and every life touched is a reflection of Vanessa's enduring impact. Thank you for helping us honor her memory.

Today, we invite you to by doing something Vanessa loved. Perform an act of kindness, spend time in nature, take a walk on the beach, practice yoga, connect with someone you care about, or simply do something that brings you joy in her memory.

If you're able, please consider making a gift in honor of Vanessa. Your support helps us reach more people with life-saving safety education and violence prevention programs, ensuring her legacy continues to make a difference. https://vtmf.org/donate

Next week marks 10 years since we lost Vanessa.

Vanessa's life was taken in a random act of violence when she was just 27 years old. For her family, friends, supporters, and all of us at the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation, August 7 is a day of remembrance, reflection, and renewed commitment to making a positive difference in her honor.

We are deeply grateful to our incredible community for helping us celebrate Vanessa's life by empowering others with personal safety and violence prevention skills. Together, we continue to honor her legacy by creating safer, stronger communities.
