The image of Rosie the Riveter is iconic, but her reality was not what you’d expect.
Hundreds of women took on “men’s jobs” during World War II, like working in manufacturing plants. But when women wanted to maintain these roles after the war, society’s view of a “women’s place” did not allow for it.
In the acclaimed 1980 documentary, “The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter,” filmmaker Connie Field weaves together interviews from five real-life “Rosies” who share how their lived experiences contrast with the lore and legend of the famous image.
The Ford-funded film earned 15 international awards for best documentary, has been preserved by the US Library of Congress, and has remained in active distribution for more than 30 years.
