We were honored to welcome Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Kiame Mahaniah, MA Department of Public Health (DPH) Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein, DPH Assistant Commissioner of Health Equity Dr. Hafsatou “Fifi” Diop, and DPH Office of Problem Gambling Services Director Victor Ortiz to Pao Arts Center to learn more about BCNC’s work addressing problem gambling in Asian and immigrant communities.

Our approach goes beyond awareness. We create culturally responsive opportunities for people to connect, reduce isolation, and find healthy alternatives to gambling and spending time in casinos.

Last year:
🎯More than 85 families and 130 participants engaged through the AAPI Community Ambassador Program increasing awareness of problem gambling prevention and promoting holistic well-being
🎨164 community members participated in free arts and cultural activities at Pao Arts Center—including ping pong, dance, and karaoke
🏫 120 high school youth from Boston, Malden, and the South Shore participated in college access and youth leadership programs. 93% of youth reported increased civic engagement and 95% of youth reported improved relationships with peers and adults.

We are grateful to our state partners for recognizing the importance of this work and continuing to invest in community-based solutions that promote health, connection, and well-being.

On Friday, July 24, BCNC Youth Program hosted its Youth Talent Showcase at Chin Park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.

The event was part of BCNC’s Youth Employment Screen-Off Initiative, where 18 young people stepped away from their phones, built face-to-face connections, expressed themselves creatively, and strengthened their confidence. Together they planned the showcase of dance, singing, monologue, and instrumental music performances. They also designed and facilitated interactive activities for children from BCNC’s Red Oak Summer program. Through the planning and rehearsal process, youth strengthened their teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. They also developed meaningful relationships with their peers, caring adults, and younger children in the community.

Special thanks to BCNC staff, Vania Ramos Pinto Pereira from the City of Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement, and Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn and the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy for their support. Also thanks to the City of Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement and Summer Fund for funding this initiative and event.

Throughout the school year, students strengthened their English and workforce skills while balancing work and family. We proudly celebrated 400 adult immigrant students in BCNC’s Adult Education and Workforce Initiatives across all five program levels. At our end-of-year celebration, students shared inspiring speeches, performed songs and poems, received certificates and awards, and reflected on their accomplishments with staff and classmates. Congratulations to our students as they advance to higher-level classes, enroll in job training programs, and begin new careers.

Reflecting on her experience, a student shared, “We didn't just learn English here; we also found a warm, welcoming home filled with friends and companions. We all came here from different countries, yet we united around a common goal.”

This year, BCNC’s YouLead program proudly engaged 65 youth across Boston and Quincy. Throughout the year, youth leaders built leadership skills, explored their identities, and learned about mental wellness, healthy living, financial literacy, and problem gambling prevention. At this year BCNC Family Fun Fair, they engaged children, youth, and adults through interactive activities and took the stage to share their talents through poetry, music, and speaking.

BCNC YouLead is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Problem Gambling Services.
