Then & Now: Faces of Julie's

We wanted to introduce a new summer series to get to know some of the wonderful staff that are part of Julie's community. Then and Now: Faces of Julie’s will give you insight into the people who are carrying out the mission that started here in South Boston, going 52 years strong.

As a child, Julie's Development Manager, Christy, loved playing with her big sister and spending time with her Grandma in Idaho where she was raised - and yes, she knows 32 ways to make a potato! Today, she enjoys sharing all the wonderful stories of impact from Julie's students and families and especially enjoys all the Halloween cuteness at Julie's!

Julie’s is proud to highlight that Shaquilla, a Julie’s alum and mother of four, has recently graduated from Roxbury Community College with her Associate’s Degree! 👩‍🎓💐 She is the first in her family to graduate college. She will continue working with Julie’s Workforce Development program in pursuit of a career in the medical field. Congratulations Shaquilla, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors! 👏

Each year at Julie’s, our community gathers for one of our most meaningful traditions — our annual butterfly release. After watching caterpillars grow and transform, children and families come together to release butterflies into the sky as a celebration of growth, hope, and possibility. 🦋

This month, the National Association of Letter Carriers and USPS hosted the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive — the largest single-day food drive in the United States.

Thanks to our Board President, Sharon, and her South Boston letter carrier, who nominated Julie’s, we received a generous donation of food items for our donation room.

Partnerships and acts of service like this help support Julie’s community of learners and families in meaningful ways. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and helped make this effort possible!

Last week, guests from Families First visited Julie’s to share with our students about their Power of Parenting free workshops. Like Julie’s, Families First believes parents have the power to shape their children's futures and make their communities stronger. We look forward to a continued partnership. Interested in Families First programs:

In each episode, you can listen to Families First's highly-skilled Program Facilitators discuss a concept from our Power of Parenting curriculum.

Take me out to the ball game!

Thank you to The Highland Street Foundation for donating 30 tickets to the Boston Red Sox vs Philadelphia Phillies, as well as preloaded concessions gift cards and t-shirts! It meant so much for Julie’s dedicated staff and volunteers to spend time together. Moments like this help build connection, strengthen our culture, and give everyone a chance to relax and root for the home team.

We need your help to provide essential groceries for our students. Your donation will help them to be successful in their studies and provide meals for their families. The food items we need the most are cereal, oatmeal, pasta, pasta sauce, boxed mac and cheese, rice, crackers, granola/cereal bars, applesauce cups, fruit cups, shelf-stable milk, and other "kid" snacks. Gift cards are also welcome. Thank you! https://www.juliesfamily.org/support-our-students/

This Mother’s Day, we honor the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and mother figures whose love, resilience, and sacrifices shape families and communities every day.

Julie’s was founded in 1974 by two educators, Sister Jean Sullivan, SNDdeN, and Sister Louise Kearns, SNDdeN, who worked closely with struggling female-headed families. Their vision was rooted in compassion, dignity, and a deep belief that every child and family deserves support and opportunity.

To all the mothers and mother figures in our community: thank you for the love you give, the burdens you carry, and the hope you inspire. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Julie’s. 💐
