This year marks the 5-year anniversary of Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday! Although the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery on September 22, 1863, word did not reach the state of Texas until June 19, 1865, almost 2 years later! Juneteenth had been celebrated locally for many years, but only reached the federal level on June 17, 2021. This holiday commemorates the important day that marked the official end of slavery in America.

This month, the Pre-K class took a family field trip to Boston Common for the International Day of Play. This free event hosted by the City of Boston featured games, dancing, music, arts-and-crafts, and more. We had so much fun!

Then & Now: Faces of Julie's

Rachel Britton, Director of Finance, spent many summers with her cousins, creating memories that shaped her deep appreciation for family. Those experiences taught her the value of strong relationships, cooperation, and the kind of connection that lasts a lifetime. Today, she carries those same values into her own beautiful, blended family, intentionally creating meaningful memories and instilling in each of her children the importance of family, love, and support. To Rachel, family is not always defined by blood — it is also built through the bonds, friendships, and relationships that become part of our lives along the way.

Last Saturday, Julie’s hosted a table at Southie Family Fun Day, and what a fun day it was. ☀️🏖️🌻 We were able to meet many members of our community and enjoy the event’s incredible atmosphere. Our very own board president Sharon Asiaf was recognized for her work with both the MOMS Club and Julie's.

We want to give a huge thank you to the South Boston MOMS Club for having us and organizing such an incredible event.

Then & Now: Faces of Julie's - Sadie Provenzano, Boston Pre-K Teacher

Then: I had a wonderful childhood, growing up in the same triple-decker in Southie where my dad grew up. It was a special place, surrounded by family. I loved sharing cups of tea with my family and playing outside for hours with my sister, cousins, and neighborhood friends.

Now: I am privileged to work in a job that I love, following in the footsteps of my parents, both teachers. I am equally blessed to be able to work in the neighborhood that I will always call home and serve the children and families of this amazing community!

Then & Now: Faces of Julie's

We wanted to introduce a new summer series to get to know some of the wonderful staff that are part of Julie's community. Then and Now: Faces of Julie’s will give you insight into the people who are carrying out the mission that started here in South Boston, going 52 years strong.

As a child, Julie's Development Manager, Christy, loved playing with her big sister and spending time with her Grandma in Idaho where she was raised - and yes, she knows 32 ways to make a potato! Today, she enjoys sharing all the wonderful stories of impact from Julie's students and families and especially enjoys all the Halloween cuteness at Julie's!

Each year at Julie’s, our community gathers for one of our most meaningful traditions — our annual butterfly release. After watching caterpillars grow and transform, children and families come together to release butterflies into the sky as a celebration of growth, hope, and possibility. 🦋
