On Monday, despite the rain, the
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst community showed up for a 5K Su***de Prevention Ruck March & Resource Walk in recognition of Su***de Prevention Month.

We held a special SAR Remembrance Ceremony for an Airman and his Brother who died by su***de, to start the ruck. (We’ll have more about that in a separate post).

22 volunteered and carried the Su***de Awareness Remembrance (S.A.R.) Flag image during the ruck.

The 22 SAR flag images served as a symbolic tribute to lives lost to su***de and a visible reminder of why connection, prevention, and early support matter.

After the ruck we were on a panel for a Q & A session that also went very well. We talked about the importance of community to facilitate prevention, the SAR Flag Family mission, and a program called “Talk Saves Lives: Supporting Our Veterans” from American Foundation for Su***de Prevention

Attention - Attention - Attention

If you are Active Military, Guard, Reserve, or have base access as a Veteran; please join us on Monday September 28th at Joint BAse McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for a Su***de prevention ruck march and resource walk. After the ruck, the SAR Flag Family will be part of a presentation followed by Q&A to better serve our Active Duty Military family.

It’s a chance to walk. To connect. To remember. To learn where support can be found.

Join the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst community for a 5K Su***de Prevention Ruck March & Resource Walk in recognition of Su***de Prevention Month.

Participants will move through the course together and stop at designated Connection Points hosted by helping agencies and community resources. At each stop, participants can learn about su***de prevention, available support services, and ways to help a Service Member, Veteran, coworker, friend, or family member who may be struggling.

22 selected participants will each carry a Su***de Awareness Remembrance (S.A.R.) Flag during the march.

The 22 flags serve as a symbolic tribute to lives lost to su***de and a visible reminder of why connection, prevention, and early support matter.

🇺🇸 HONORING. REMEMBERING. SUPPORTING.

New York State Department of Veterans' Services Veterans Benefits Advisor II Rob Stutz, DVS Outreach Team members, and DVS Deputy Counsel Benjamin Pomerance (joined by Rob’s service dog Commander Cody) displayed the Su***de Awareness & Remembrance (SAR) Flag during our 2026 DVS Annual Training in Saratoga Springs.

The SAR Flag honors Veterans and Service Members lost to su***de, recognizes their families, and carries an important message of hope to those who may be struggling: You are not alone, and you deserve care and support.

By encouraging open conversations about mental health and seeking support, the SAR Flag movement is helping break the stigma and reminding us of the importance of looking out for one another.

DVS is proud to carry this message of remembrance, compassion and connection into communities across New York State. Our thanks to SAR Flag - Veteran-Operated creator, United States Air Force Veteran, and our friend, Kevin W. 🇺🇸 Honoring the Fallen. Supporting Those Who Carry Their Memory.

Paws of War was honored to attend the SAR Flag Remembrance Ceremony at the Heritage Center in Mount Sinai, hosted by Suffolk County Legislator Chad H. Lennon.

SAR — Su***de Awareness & Remembrance, founded by Kevin Hertel, is dedicated to honoring our fallen service members, supporting their families, and raising awareness of veteran and military su***de.

This ceremony held special meaning as we came together in remembrance of Lance Corporal DaSilva, alongside his family, to honor his life, service, and sacrifice. ❤️🇺🇸

The ceremony followed the 2,222 Pull-Up Challenge, a collective effort to raise awareness of veteran and military su***de and help break the stigma surrounding su***de prevention.

Representing Paws of War were Mike Kilano and volunteer Ray Myers, standing alongside veterans, families, and community members to ensure our fallen heroes are never forgotten.

To the DaSilva family, thank you for allowing the community to share in honoring Lance Corporal DaSilva’s memory. 🇺🇸🐾

In recognition of September 22, 2026 as "Veterans Su***de Awareness and Remembrance Day" in the Town of Oyster Bay, we raised the SAR Flag, a symbol to raise our continued awareness of military and veteran su***de throughout our community.
