The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is mourning the loss of Harry, a 33-year-old western lowland silverback gorilla who passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Harry died due to a sudden cardiac event, despite immediate and valiant efforts by the zoo staff to resuscitate him. He had been under treatment for heart disease since 2022, and the zoo had been working with the Great Ape Heart Project, a group of specialists focused on cardiac health in great apes, to manage his condition. Western lowland gorillas are known to be highly susceptible to cardiac disease, which likely contributed to his sudden passing. Harry was the oldest male in the zoo’s troop of six gorillas and was a beloved figure among staff and visitors, having lived at the Pittsburgh Zoo since 1992 after being born at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1991.

Dear Friends of The Harambe Foundation Inc.,
✨🦍🌴♥️✨
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to gorilla conservation in Africa, we’ve always strived to be transparent with our amazing community. Today, we want to share an update on some challenges we’ve faced and the steps we’re taking to move forward stronger than ever.

Our former treasurer and board director, Jeff McCurry, who resigned on February 2, 2022, failed to direct significant proceeds from NFT sales of Harambe images to the Foundation, withheld the images we were promised for fundraising, and improperly withdrew funds from our account upon his resignation. Our former secretary and board director, Nicole Slater, also resigned on the same day after her negligence led to her personal Instagram account (linked to our Wix account) being hacked by cryptocurrency scammers in late January 2022. She failed to change the passwords, even after the hack, as confirmed by the unchanged “1jerrystones” password she provided. The hacked account still misrepresents her as a board director, damaging our reputation. Additionally, Erik E. Crown, the director and producer of the Harambe movie, has not fulfilled his commitment to provide the majority of the movie’s profits to support our conservation programs. These individuals have also made defamatory statements, further hindering our mission.

But here’s the hopeful news: we’re taking action to protect the Foundation and our mission! We’ve sent final demand notices to Jeff and Erik, and a cease and desist letter to Nicole, giving them until March 30, 2025, to comply. These steps show our commitment to accountability and ensuring that resources meant for gorilla conservation are used as intended. We’re also working with Lawyers Clearinghouse to secure pro bono legal support to pursue these matters in court if necessary, and we’re confident that justice will prevail.

We remain steadfast in our mission to protect these incredible animals and their habitats, and we’re more determined than ever to overcome these obstacles with transparency and integrity.

We’re incredibly grateful for your trust and encouragement as we navigate this journey. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for standing with us as we fight for the gorillas! ♥️

With gratitude,
Heather Marderosian

Dear Supporters, ✨🦍✨

We want to share an important update about our efforts to honor Harambe’s legacy and protect gorillas in Africa. When the Harambe Foundation was founded, we were promised significant support from the documentary Harambe and NFT sales of Harambe’s iconic images, with proceeds intended to fund our conservation programs. These promises were made both privately and publicly, including statements that NFT sales would benefit a nonprofit to help gorillas.
Sadly, despite earning over $1,000,000 from NFT sales, including a notable sale in 2021, the individuals responsible have not fulfilled their commitment to direct these funds to the Harambe Foundation. They have also failed to transfer the Harambe images to us, as promised, which would have allowed us to use them for fundraising to support our mission. This has significantly impacted our ability to fund critical programs like junior ranger initiatives and poacher reform efforts.
We have formally demanded the owed funds and images, giving them until April 3, 2025, to comply. If they do not, we will pursue legal action to ensure these resources are used as intended—to protect gorillas and their habitats. We remain committed to transparency and accountability, and we’ll keep you updated on our progress.
Thank you for standing with us in this fight for Harambe’s legacy and the future of gorilla conservation. Together, we can make a difference!
