How can we make a distinction between the living and the nonliving? In the living there is freedom, there is intelligence. In the nonliving all is bound and no freedom is possible, because there is no intelligence. The freedom that distinguishes us from mere machines is what we are all striving for. When the object of our love is dying every moment, and our minds are also constantly changing as we grow, what eternal love can you expect to find in the world? There cannot be any real love but in God: why then all these other loves? These are mere stages.
