Adjunct representatives are continuing negotiations with Mercy administration in an effort to more than double their salary per course over the next three years, improve job security, earn  tuition remission, and have an option to buy into the faculty healthcare plan. We applaud Boston City Councilor Kenzie Bok for standing for safe working conditions at Northeastern! Campus health is community health, and instructors need to have the option to teach remotely.

City Councilor Kenzie Bok called for Northeastern and BU to reverse plans for in-person learning this fall.

Attention all Northeastern faculty concerned about Fall 2020 reopening! Join us tomorrow, Friday 7/24, for a campus-wide conversation. The conversation will be among instructors only, without administrators, and will begin at 4PM EDT.

Through conversations we’ve had across departments the past few weeks, we’ve found that many of you share deep concerns around public health over the reopening of campus. That is why we are participating in the circulation of this instructor-wide petition, calling on the administration to allow greater flexibility and ensure that no teacher be required to teach in person.

Join us in calling on Northeastern administration to ensure that no instructor is required to teach in person during the pandemic.

We, the undersigned, including Northeastern University tenured and tenure-track professors, fixed-term faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate student teaching fellows, teaching assistants, and graders (collectively “Northeastern University instructors”) call on the University administration to ensur...

STATEMENT: Northeastern Full-Time Non-Tenure Track Faculty stand in solidarity with College Bound Dorchester workers

The Organizing Committee of the Full-time Non-tenure Track Faculty Union at Northeastern University stands in solidarity with College Bound Dorchester workers. We demand that CEO Mark Culliton and CBD leadership immediately reinstate the eight workers and voluntarily recognize their union, Uncornered United - SEIU Local 888.

Firing workers in retaliation for organizing is wrong. Firing workers during the COVID pandemic is wrong. Firing workers of color during a global uprising against white supremacy
and police brutality is wrong. Firing workers of color for speaking out against racism within the organization is wrong. We are deeply concerned that College Bound Dorchester—a social justice organization whose mission we as university teachers fully embrace—has taken these illegal and immoral actions now. We believe actions speak louder than words, and CBD’s recent actions contradict and compromise its mission “to transform neighborhoods through education by ending generational cycles of urban poverty, violence and lack of opportunity.”

For us this issue is also personal. One of the eight workers is a former student of ours at Northeastern. Joe Tache, a social studies teacher and college readiness advisor at CBD, was a leader in the classroom and is now a leader in the community—and someone who inspires us through their commitment to grassroots struggles for racial justice. As teachers at a predominately white institution in Boston we are committed to challenging structural racism and antiblackness where we work, in part by strengthening our relationships with and accountability to our neighbors in Roxbury and Dorchester. We want to partner with organizations like College Bound Dorchester, but we cannot in good faith work with organizations that betray their own values and workers. As full-time non-tenure track faculty at Northeastern we know a thing or two about union-busting, having been repeatedly denied the right to an election by our own administration who claims we are managers, not workers.

We call on College Bound Dorchester to do the right thing. Reinstate the workers and recognize their union now.

The Organizing Committee of the Full-time Non-tenure Track Faculty Union at Northeastern stands in solidarity with the wave of protesters, locally and globally, demanding accountability for the brutal murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Rayshard Brooks, and so many others at the hands of the police. We know that police brutality is simply one way that anti-black violence shows up in our society, at our institutions, and at Northeastern specifically. So, we affirm the dignity of Black lives and our commitment to abolishing white supremacy and police violence everywhere, and especially on our campus.

As we continue to come together to build a stronger faculty voice, we call on the Northeastern University administration to take bold and concrete antiracist action to ensure our university upholds its commitment to foster a diverse and just society. View our statement here:
