We celebrate Earth Day.
They defend it.

🌎

From the Amazon to the Great Rift Valley, Indigenous peoples protect the ecosystems we all depend on β€” every single day.

Against the odds, some of Vietnam’s most endangered primates are still holding on. Recent field surveys confirmed red-cheeked gibbons and, for the first time ever in this area, black-shanked douc langurs.

Our partners at the Center for Technology and Nature Conservation .2019 are working on the ground with local communities and authorities to understand and protect these species and the forests they depend on.

They’re turning conservation into daily action: training rangers, equipping patrol teams with SMART monitoring tools, and tracking threats in real time.

Because protecting these forests doesn’t happen by chance.
It happens because people show up β€” every single day.

This World Wildlife Day, we’re celebrating rewilding in action. 🐒

After 150 years of extinction, giant tortoises are once again roaming Floreana Island in the GalΓ‘pagos.

Driven to extinction in the 1840s by whalers, the Floreana giant tortoise survived only through a small genetically related population discovered decades later. A targeted breeding program launched in 2017 has produced more than 600 hatchlings β€” and 158 juveniles have now returned to their ancestral island.

Together with conservation partners, .jocotoco helped make this historic return possible β€” beginning with the removal of invasive rats and feral cats to prepare the island for true ecosystem recovery.

Giant tortoises are ecological engineers. By grazing, dispersing seeds, and shaping vegetation, they restore habitats that support birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and endemic plants.

Rewilding works.

In 2025, the Shore Women protected a perfectly timed miracle.

Miles of beach restored, breeding grounds protected, and thousands of visitors guided to .

In 2026, the work grows.

More restored habitat. More trained women leaders. More education, science, and protectionβ€”right where migration depends on timing.

Join us and our partners in supporting the Shore Women and building what comes next. 🌊🐦

Together, we protect the journey.

🦈A major new report has just mapped over 750 Important Shark and Ray Areas β€” the most comprehensive picture yet of where these iconic ocean travellers live, breed, feed and migrate.

Built on the expertise of 1,330+ scientists from more than 100 countries, the Ocean Travellers Report brings together decades of research to identify:
β€’ reproductive sites
β€’ migratory corridors
β€’ feeding areas
β€’ aggregation hotspots

Sharks and rays are the second most threatened group of vertebrates on Earth, with more than one third of species at risk of extinction

This science is a powerful tool for action. By showing where sharks and rays are most vulnerable β€” and most valuable β€” it gives governments, conservationists and ocean managers a clearer roadmap to protect them.

The report was produced by the IUCN Species Survival Commission Shark Specialist Group with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.

Magellanic Plovers nest directly on the ground, relying on near-perfect camouflage to protect their eggs. This strategy works against natural predators β€” but not against human disturbance or introduced species such as minks and dogs.

That’s why protective enclosures matter! The conservation heroes of Maca Tobiano, are working to safeguard nests and give these birds a fighting chance.

In 2025, something extraordinary happened in Patagonia.
For the first time ever, Hooded Grebe chicks raised in captivity were successfully released back into the wild β€” a groundbreaking step for one of the world’s most endangered birds.

This milestone is the result of years of innovation by MacΓ‘ Tobiano, combining captive-rearing with other pioneering strategies like anti-wind nesting platforms, invasive species control, and constant colony monitoring.

And this is just the beginning. In 2026, the program will expand, giving even more Hooded Grebe chicks a chance to survive and rebuild the population.

Nine calves so far this season is a reason for hope, especially for the most endangered whale on Earth. Each new calf matters. Each one represents resilience, careful monitoring, and years of protection efforts beginning to show results.

But this hope is fragile.
Right whales still face constant threats from ship strikes, entanglement, and habitat disruption. These calves remind us what is possible β€” and what is still at stake.

We’ll continue following the season closely and sharing updates as they come. We’ll also continue working alongside the Canadian Whale Institute, whose teams are ready to respond to entangled whales off the coast of Canada.

We are always hopeful when new calves are born. Even when their numbers are still far too low for recovery, they remind us why this fight matters, and why we must stay motivated.

Our partners at the Canadian Whale Institute work every day to prevent entanglements and respond when whales become trapped, doing everything possible to save their lives.
