Meet the NUtalk 2019 speakers!
Northeastern student Juan Gallego has spent the past five years dedicated to advancing public policy, championing grassroots campaigns, and community building. Recognizing that the Latinx community in Massachusetts lags substantially behind other groups in the state on a wide array of social, educational, and financial metrics, Juan has dedicated himself to amplifying his community’s voice. His efforts have prioritized increased voter turnout and representation in elected office from the Latinx community by managing multiple local campaigns’ get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts, tailored specifically towards immigrants. In his hometown of Chelsea, Massachusetts Juan has advocated for the city to establish a Human Rights Commission and became one of the commission’s inaugural appointed members. Juan hopes to one day represent his community and all of the commonwealth by running for elected office.

Meet the NUtalk 2019 speakers!
Vidhan Bhaiya is a 4th-year Chemical Engineer at Northeastern who's currently building Dr. Brinsley. Every 20 seconds, one foot is lost due to diabetes in the world today. Over half of these could be prevented if people wore correct footwear. Dr. Brinsley makes a range of performance footwear for people with diabetes so you don't have to choose between looking good and losing your foot! Outside of Dr. Brinsley, Vidhan can be seen around the IDEA Lab.

Meet the NUtalk 2019 speakers!
Claire Williams is a fifth year biochemistry student who is interested in understanding the role that microorganisms play in the conservation of species. Microbes are ubiquitous and play important roles in ecosystems, yet are often overlooked when evaluating the impacts of human activity on various environments. Claire has studied microbiomes from soil, honey bees, and more recently tropical forest lizards and hopes to connect this experience with tools from conservation biology in graduate school.

Resource inequality is one of our greatest challenges, but it's not unique to humans. Like us, mycorrhizal fungi that live in plant and tree roots strategically trade, steal and withhold resources, displaying remarkable parallels to humans in their capacity to be opportunistic (and sometimes ruthles...
