Looking well be on the surface into the deep Waters of Japan. Our team has made its second stop to record some deep sea creatures in Suruga Bay.

Hammerheads aren’t just visually distinct — their unique head shape is a powerful sensory advantage.

Their wide, flattened “hammer” is lined with thousands of electroreceptors, allowing them to detect the faint electrical signals produced by other animals. By spreading these sensors across a broader area, hammerheads can more precisely locate prey — even when it’s hidden beneath the sand.

Our team is gearing up for the Expedition season. Many of our team members are set to travel to several parts of the globe. Although our world sometimes seems distant and separate, all the oceans and waterways are connected to one another. Ocean giants move all around the world, and as we look to learn from them, we must follow their paths in studying them.
