In the HMS MEDscience Lab program, curiosity becomes discovery. Through hands-on experiments, collaboration and critical thinking, our students gain real-world laboratory experience that brings science to life.

From performing urinalysis and running gel electrophoresis to mastering serological pipetting techniques and analyzing experimental results, every session is an opportunity to think like a scientist, ask questions, solve problems, and learn by doing. 🧪🔬

Every week, each clinical student leaves this program not just with new knowledge, skills and friendships, but also nationally recognized certifications in CPR and Stop the Bleed. From emergency response training to real-world clinical simulation, these students are building the confidence and competence needed to step into healthcare.

This prestigious honor recognizes individuals across Harvard University whose work makes an extraordinary impact. While Julie is being recognized, this award is also a reflection of the dedication, passion, and commitment of the entire HMS MEDscience team.

For more than 20 years, HMS MEDscience has inspired students to explore careers in medicine, science, and healthcare through hands-on learning and mentorship. Julie’s leadership has helped advance that mission and create opportunities for thousands of young people.

Before the whirlwind of our summer programs begins, the team took a day to recharge, reconnect, and have a little fun together. We started the morning at Sweat Studio Boston, where there was plenty of laughter (and sweat!), and then gathered at City Year for a day of planning, reflection, and dreaming big for the months ahead. As our organization continues to grow, we are constantly reminded that our greatest strength is our people. This talented, passionate, and mission-driven team shows up every day to inspire and empower the next generation of STEM leaders. As the Executive Director I am so grateful for each and every one of them.

We 🫀our MEDsci volunteers! Meet Sam, she’s volunteering with EMK and Madison Park students!

“Hi, my name is Sam Hawkins and I will be attending the University of Illinois College of Medicine this upcoming semester! After graduating from the University of Rochester in 2023, I spent my three gap years working as a Research Assistant at the BU Brain Bank, volunteering with veterans at the VA hospitals, and volunteered as a teacher for the HMS Program. Working with HMS showed me the importance of collaborative and hands-on learning that requires creative thinking to explain complex concepts and encourage problem-solving. These experiences deepened my passion for medical education, collaboration, and mentorship, which I hope to expand upon throughout medical school and my future career as a clinician!”

Dr. Tenley Albright, Olympic figure skater, MEDscience board member and Harvard Medical School surgeon, has received the HMS Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award for HMS Alumni is an annual honor presented by the ⁠Harvard Medical Alumni Association to recognize individuals who have made remarkable, long-standing contributions to the Harvard Medical School (HMS) community. As a member of the MEDscience board, Tenley inspires our students and helps shape our program in a myriad of meaningful ways. No one is more deserving of this prestigious award.
