Local Program for urban youth burglarized, $15,000 in office, STEM & sports equipment and cash stolen
Youth Program Operator Seeking Information In Recent Robbery
Dorchester, MA, August 14 -- On Saturday morning, August 4, Tyson Bolling, president and executive director of the City Youth Sports Training an Education Movement (CYSTEM) arrived at the organization’s main office, located at 67 Torey Street, Dorchester, to pick up equipment for its annual Field Day — only to discover that the offices had been burglarized.
Among the stolen items were camera and sports equipment for the youth sports media program, speakers and PA system for the Saturday event, all of the office computers, including monitors and laptops and tablets, and a video projector used for events. In addition, cash recently collected from participants’ fundraising efforts and gift cards used as awards for youth recognition and incentives were also stolen.
“We operate on a very lean budget, so this is devastating blow to the program and the community, but we are resilient,” said Bolling. “I won’t lie, it will take some time, hard work and grit to get our program back up and running again. We were looking forward to starting our new season this September, but my worst fear is that is going to be delayed. It is important that we continue to provide quality services at no cost to our community and our children and their families are the ones who will suffer the most.”
The CYSTEM has been doing its part to help educate young people for the last ten years by offering service to the community at no cost. It is designed to prepare young student athletes to excel in school, athletics and their social lives. Through sports and individual mentorship, we teach fair competition, good sportsmanship, personal accountability and a healthy living. Our student athletes are coached on the ins and outs of our most popular sports— basketball, football, and baseball as well as sporting activities like hiking, camping, triathlon, skiing and tennis.
“The program is free to all participants, we only ask that our student athletes dedicate themselves by demonstrating good attendance, positive attitude and an appetite to work hard on improving their skills and knowledge, and team building,” said Bolling.
“So far there are no leads. I’m hoping someone saw something that could provide us with some information leading to an arrest, or maybe the thief will have a change of heart and decide to return the stolen items.”
