The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization Organizing for the greater good. Our primary goal is to develop local leadership and organized power to fight for social justice.

The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO) is a broad-based organization that works to coalesce, train, and organize the communities of Greater Boston across religious, racial, ethnic, class, and neighborhood lines for the public good. We strive to hold both public and private power holders accountable for their public responsibilities.

Just yesterday a group of clergy and other leaders from GBIO and allies from .ice.citizensbank coalition attended the annual Citizens Bank shareholder meeting to ask direct questions about their financial relationship to CoreCivic and GEO Group, two companies responsible for advancing the mass immigration crackdown. During the Q&A, Rev. Ray Hammond of was able to express our collective disappointment in this relationship and pointed out that GBIO had sent two letter previously requesting to discuss the problem that had been ignored.

While Citizens did not fully acknowledge the scope of the problem and said they are investigating internally, they DID agree to schedule a meeting with us. Our hope is that this is the first development toward holding them accountable and leading them to divest from these deplorable corporations.

GBIO’s relationship with Citizens Bank goes back over a decade, most notably with the Moving From Debts to Assets program that provided financial literally training and a stipend to hundreds of Boston residents.

This is the formal launch of the “Not With Our Money, Citizens!” campaign. From here, GBIO is prepared to withdraw money in million dollar increments should Citizens not take accountability, meet with us, and ultimately divest.

Do YOU or your organization bank with citizens? If so, consider pledging to join this organized money campaign with us! Link in our bio for details.

Excited to share that GBIO is teaming up with for an interfaith day of action next month! Join us at the State House to learn details about Clean Slate legislation and visit our lawmakers to lobby for their support!

This legislation protects opportunity for justice-involved individuals by automatically sealing eligible criminal offender record information (CORIs) after a certain amount of time. As it stands, people can petition to have their own records sealed, but the process is costly, and unknown by many who are eligible. Passing clean slate laws (which have passed in at least 10 other states) would cut costs, and streamline this process for more individuals.

Visit the links pictured to register and get more information, and we look forward to seeing you on 9/17!

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of attending a ceremony hosted by the Massachusetts Housing Partnership () where we and several others were recognized as 2025 Housing Heroes! We are grateful to MHP and appreciate receiving this honor for the work our leaders and allies did over the course of our Housing Justice Campaign.

Thank you to our Chair, Phil Hillman, for receiving this honor on behalf of GBIO and sharing remarks. We also appreciate the several tenant leaders who attended and got their due recognition for helping move our campaign forward. There’s more work to be done, but when we organize, anything is possible!

Marched from Lexington to Boston with and only got rained on once! Thank you to and the many clergy leaders who rallied to organize this incredible event in two short weeks. In this moment of turmoil and uncertainty, we can no longer be silent about where we stand. Our respective faiths compel us to love justice, our neighbors, and the practice of healthy democracy. The threats to the safety of our sensitive places of worship and the people who utilize them are abhorrent, and we will use our collective voices to resist. We look forward to collaborating further as a united community of faith

Many of our leaders are still organizing around the continued preservation and improvement of our state’s public housing supply. This week, Arlene Hill, a Brookline Housing tenant, went to ’s office and delivered 50 letters written by fellow tenants and allies from Activist Evenings, an affiliate of at .

We hope to see Governor Healey, and the administration include as much of the $2.2 billion authorized in the in the forthcoming capital budget to keep the repair of our vital housing resource a priority.

In organizing, we believe that as much work should go into keeping a deal as went into making it. A number of our leaders (Dru Greenwood, Phil Hillman, Charlie Homer and Jim Batchelor) put their heads together alongside ally organizations MassNAHRO, Mass Union of Public Housing Tenants and CHAPA to draft a “Pathway to Parity” for public housing in Massachusetts. The plan proposes that the annual operating budget for state housing be increased incrementally over a 5 year period, eventually putting us in line with the federal subsidy. In addition to the $2.2 billion in bonds approved via the Affordable Homes Act, this will make a real difference in housing availability and quality for tenants.

Thanks to all who took part in working on this, and shoutout to our leaders for hand delivering a letter about the plan directly to ’s office! We look forward to a response.
