Complex pressures have led to cracks in our maternal health system. To relieve these pressures, we focused on something deceptively simple: communication. TeamBirth improves communication to enable positive change—change that empowers mothers and improves outcomes.

In hundreds of labor and delivery units across the U.S. and beyond, patients and clinicians are benefiting from TeamBirth, Ariadne Labs’ caregiving model that promotes teamwork, communication, and dignity.

Wellbeing and quality of life matter to everyone, but they are especially important for people living in nursing homes. The Wellbeing Toolkit helps long-term care providers discuss wellbeing with residents and then tailor care to their goals and values.

In a pilot of the Toolkit, staff and leadership thought it was easy to use, improved individualized care, and strengthened relationships with residents, families, and staff.

Globally, a lot of work to improve maternal and newborn health has focused on helping women and babies survive birth complications. But what happens after survival?

The Beyond Survival Study, a collaboration with KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme, followed women from birth through the postpartum period to understand impacts of birth complications on mothers, newborns, and households in low-resource settings in Kenya. We found ripples of impact - complications affect mothers' and families' physical health, emotional health, social health, financial health, and more. Each mother has a unique, complex story.

The study, available now in PLOS Global Public Health, elevates these stories to shed light on how we can help mothers, babies, and families thrive beyond survival.

In Costa Rica, primary care is the bridge between clinical care and public health. When communities have a source of care and clinics know who their patients are, they can work together to prevent disease and promote health.

Primary Health Care Faculty Madeline Pesec, MD, ScM joins Primary Focus to discuss what health systems in Canada and the US can learn from Costa Rica.

After surgery, Carl developed an infection requiring 10 days of hospital care. He was dreading the droning machines and disrupted sleep of a hospital stay, but soon learned he could get all his care at home thanks to a new Rural Home Hospital program.

Our new randomized controlled trial in JAMA Network Open showed that for patients like Carl, Rural Home Hospital programs can deliver acute care at an equal or lower cost compared to brick-and-mortar hospitals, while providing a better patient experience.

As for Carl, he can attest to the experience: "You get all the rest you need, you don’t have to go to the hospital and sit around. It’s just more comfortable for the patient."

Hear the stories of Carl and others who participated in the trial:

In a bright spot for rural health care, our new RCT in JAMA Network Open found that a Rural Home Hospital model can deliver acute care at an equal or lower cost compared to brick-and-mortar hospitals, while providing a better patient experience.

As rural hospitals face headwinds and patients often have to travel long distances for care, these results show Rural Home Hospital has the potential to close care gaps.

Special thanks to our partners at Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH), Alberta Health Services, Blessing Health System, and Mass General Brigham!

Oklahoma is doing amazing work to improve maternal and child health outcomes, and we're proud TeamBirth has been part of this journey. Amidst a sea of factors influencing health in the state, Oklahoma Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative, hospitals, and leaders are making meaningful change to improve care for mothers and babies.

Oklahoma mothers are experiencing fewer unexpected complications during their hospitalization for delivery. But those mothers and infants are still dying at higher rates than the national average, a new March of Dimes report found.

"The death of primary care has been prematurely foretold for about 60 years now. Every time, it misses a fundamental thing: that most humans are looking for relationship in their health care journey. They’re looking for a trusted advisor. They’re looking for someone who knows them over time and who also sees them. They’re looking for the property of being seen." - Asaf Bitton on “Alive and Kicking” from The New England Journal of Medicine

In the first podcast episode of Not Otherwise Specified Season 3, “The Forever Crisis of Primary Care,” Dr. Lisa Rosenbaum talks with primary care guru Dr. Asaf Bitton about the vast values gap between patients and the health care system.

Patients with medical and social complexities have many needs, but one need is foundational: the need to be known and cared for on your own terms. Upward Health is using the Serious Illness Conversation Guide and What Matters to Me Workbook to build trust and provide person-centered care to patients who have too often been medically underserved.
