Calliope

Calliope The group takes its name from the eldest of the nine Muses, Calliope, whose name means “Beautiful Voice”. Currently, we perform two concerts each year.

We share the joy of music through passionate collaboration between singers and instrumentalists. Calliope is a nonprofit volunteer music organization, serving the Boston community. Our auditioned volunteer membership includes approximately 40 singers, 30 instrumentalists, and several nonperforming members. Expression in instrumental music is a combination of purity of tone, a palette of color, fin

e tuning, and purposeful line. The most significant difference between music executed by instruments and that which is executed by the voice is the addition of words. Composers and singers use the text, in combination with the instrumental qualities, to drive the musical expression. Calliope, therefore, as Muse of eloquence and epic verse, not only illustrates our goal to express with “beautiful voice”, but to do so with the lucid poetry of song.

We are very pleased to congratulate the winner of our 1st Annual Call for Scores Bobby Ge for his submission "I Cannot Dream Your Dreams", for choir and orchestra. Calliope will give the world premiere to this work on our Winter concert, tentatively scheduled for February-March 2021.

We would also like to announce two Honorable Mentions, "Requiem and Kyrie" for chorus and strings by Jeremy Beck, and "Battle-Pieces" for chorus and strings by Jonathan Santore.

Thanks to all of the 54 composers who participated for "answering the call"! We look forward to offering our 2nd Call for Scores in Spring 2021!

For our 8th Calliope@3, we offer a Memorial Day tribute - James Hewitt's original setting of the Star Spangled Banner, transcribed by Music Director Patrick Valentino and featuring tenor Warren Campbell. The photo montage includes images from Great Smokies and Acadia National Parks, the storied Bristol 4th of July Parade, and various Americana - bonus points to anyone who can identify all of them!
Complete lyrics to all 4 verses can be found here: http://www.songlyrics.com/francis-scott-key/star-spangled-banner-lyrics/
