Martin Luther King Jr.’s radical legacy includes the full scope of his moral and political vision, which went far beyond polite appeals for racial harmony to a sustained challenge against racism, militarism, and economic exploitation. Where his work is often softened or selectively remembered, we embrace the clarity of his insistence that injustice is structural and demands collective, transformative action. This is especially the case for those pushed to the margins.

King was explicit that racial justice could not be separated from economic justice, declaring, “The dispossessed of this nation, the poor, both white and Black, live in a cruelly unjust society,” and he challenged a system that normalized inequality by reminding us that “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”

Taking his radical legacy seriously compels us to confront uncomfortable truths about power, poverty, and race today, and to measure our commitments not by symbolic reverence, but by whether we are willing to pursue the deep social changes he believed were necessary for genuine freedom.
