New CATF analysis details the toll from coal 🏭

Each year, U.S. coal power plant air pollution has been linked to 6,600 premature deaths and $100 billion in damages.

We analyzed ~200 coal-fired power plants that emit harmful soot and smog, and the science is clear: reducing pollution from coal-fired power plants is one of the most effective actions we can take to protect public health.

However, the Department of Energy has begun to issue unlawful orders forcing aging coal plants to continue operating beyond their planned retirement date. If retired on schedule through 2028, the U.S. could save ~$28 billion in health-related costs and prevent nearly 2,000 deaths.

That’s why Clean Air Task Force, in partnership with the Bezos Earth Fund, convened leaders from across the geothermal innovation space this weekend at the 2nd Superhot Rock Geothermal Summit. With a focus on global collaboration, we dove into the details of what’s needed today to advance superhot rock geothermal as a viable clean energy source.

The not only allowed participants to discuss technical advancements and approaches, but also helped to build relationships that will drive future collaborations – building the ecosystem for geothermal innovation.

U.S. EPA finalized its unlawful repeal of the endangerment finding yesterday – the landmark scientific and legal determination that climate pollution harms public health and welfare.

Eliminating the endangerment finding disregards the consequences of pollution – despite the mountain of scientific evidence that greenhouse gas emissions harm public health and the environment.

CATF will challenge this repeal – continuing to defend the law and the science to safeguard these critical climate and public health protections.
