BLU Chief Steward Bryce Kieren Healy, President Allie Hahn, and Secretary Madeleine Wright showed off our new t-shirts last weekend at the AFT-MA Fall Conference!

Allie also joined AFT-MA President Jessica Tang as well as representatives from Boston Teachers Union and Chelsea Teachers Union to talk about BLU's work around the upcoming midterm elections.

It was a great day of learning and being in solidarity with our union siblings across the Commonwealth. Who are we? AFT!

With more than 60 vacancies across the system, Boston Public Library has reached a tipping point. If more staff are not hired, and soon, branches may be forced to cut service hours, programs will have to be cancelled, and the people of Boston will lose access to the BEST resource they have.

Trying to solve a budget crisis at the expense of fully-staffed libraries isn't going to work. Especially not when libraries are already picking up the work of other understaffed departments. Boston deserves a robust, functioning library system and an electoral body that understands that.

Reminder to all BLU members! We'll be meeting next week to discuss important union issues. Join us on Tuesday at noon for our hybrid meeting or tune in virtually on Wednesday evening.

Zoom links will be sent out to members' personal emails this week. We'll see you there!

The Unafraid Library Worker Pledge is a reflection of the promises we make to every person who walks through our door.

As part of our , BPL staff received a copy of the pledge to sign and display. Unfortunately, BPL will not allow staff to hang these posters in public areas, but just because you can't see them doesn't mean our staff aren't upholding these promises!

We want everyone who uses the library to know that our staff do their best to keep everyone who uses the library safe and protect our most vulnerable community members, even when we can't do it out in the open.

This past Monday, BLU celebrated by marching with alongside labor unions and organizations from across Boston and the Commonwealth. Solidarity with workers every day, everywhere!

In solidarity with and other community and labor organizations, BLU has sent a letter to the Massachusetts Attorney General urging her to take action to protect gender-affirming care for trans youth across the Commonwealth.

Despite our state's strong civil rights laws, major health centers have preemptively cut off vital medical transition care for trans youth out of fear of federal retaliation. This has left families scrambling, forcing young people to travel out of state or lose access to life-saving healthcare entirely.

The Attorney General’s office has already confirmed that Massachusetts law protects this care. Now, we need her to enforce the law and hold these providers accountable. Visit Protect Trans Futures page to sign on to their letter and add your voice alongside ours!

In the FY27 budget, Mayor Wu and the City prided themselves on not having to make any cuts to library hours. They know how critical our services are and how much our patrons depend on us.

The current hiring slow down makes providing those services to all of you difficult, if not impossible. On some days, all we can do is keep the doors open. We deserve better than that and so do you!

We need the City to prioritize filling staff vacancies within the library before a staffing shortage forces us to close our doors on those who need us most. We show up every day to serve this City and all who call it home, we need the City to start showing up for us, too.

We had so much fun at our two weeks ago. Members and their families gathered together to cook, relax, and connect on a beautiful summer day. We can't wait to see what fun event our Membership Committee plan nexts!
