Sign up at the link below for our emails and monthly Zoom link. The Worcester Square Area Neighborhood is a community organization in Boston, Massachusetts. The neighborhood it represents is bordered by East Canton, East Newton, and Northampton Streets between Washington and Albany Streets. Worcester Square is also part of the historic South End of Boston and is the home of the Boston University Medical Center, formerly Boston City Hospital. Our meetings are always held the fourth Tuesday of the month except for August and December when there is no meeting. Meetings start at 7 PM, currently on zoom. Please join our email list at Worcestersquare.org to be notified of the zoom meetings.

Today’s ride down memory lane takes us to the former Boston College property on Harrison Ave.

BC was almost founded in the West End but anti-Catholic sentiment pushed the BC founder (Fr. McElroy) to purchase land in the South End instead. The first BC building opened on Harrison in 1864 welcoming its first class of 24 young, Irish men. Remember, BC was founded to provide affordable education for Boston’s new Irish immigrant class.
BC remained in the South End for nearly 50 years before outgrowing their campus and moving to Chestnut Hill, leaving behind BC High School. BC High would eventually move to its present location in the mid to late 1950’s along Morrissey Blvd.
The pictures presented here show the original BC building, and development plans that never came to fruition.

Helping to keep the area looking sharp!

With support in part from Fidelity Investments repairs are being made to the Rutland Washington Community Garden fence. Panel sections are being cleaned of rust, repainted, and will be rewelded back to posts in the garden shortly.
