Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, the day that marks the effective end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free.

Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder that justice often arrives unevenly. It invites us to reflect on the ongoing work of building a society where dignity, equity, and belonging are realities for all people.

At Mosaic Interfaith Youth Action, we believe that young people have the power to bridge divides, challenge injustice, and create communities rooted in understanding and compassion. As we honor Juneteenth, we also honor the resilience, courage, and contributions of Black Americans whose struggles and achievements continue to shape our nation.

May this day inspire us not only to remember history, but to learn from it and work together toward a more just and peaceful future.

One thing that stood out this year was how many youth came in thinking their job was to have the right answers. Throughout the year, that view shifted. They started realizing their job was to ask better questions.

That's a hard thing to teach, but it's one of the most important things we do.

🌡️ June Campaign Update!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we've raised $32,000 toward our $50,000 goal!

Every dollar raised this month directly supports Mosaic's youth programs across Greater Boston, helping young people build relationships across differences, develop leadership skills, and create more just, peaceful, and connected communities.

We're getting closer, but there's still work to do before June ends.

Help us reach our goal:

Earlier today, Mosaic youth had the incredible opportunity to attend the premiere screening of EarthLight: The Power of EarthLight and the Human Perspective at the Museum of Science, Boston .

The film explores the concept of the Overview Effect—the profound shift in perspective many astronauts experience when viewing Earth from space. Seeing our planet without borders, divisions, or labels often inspires a deeper sense of connection, responsibility, and wonder. These themes resonate deeply with Mosaic's mission and with many spiritual traditions, which encourage us to recognize our shared humanity and interconnectedness.

Our youth were also among the first to engage with Afrobotica, an AI experience created by astronaut, artist, and educator Sian Proctor, exploring how technology, creativity, and storytelling can help us imagine a more connected future.

The evening was made even more memorable by the opportunity to meet both asronauts Dr. Sian Proctor and Cady Coleman. Their stories reminded us that when we broaden our perspective, we often discover that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.

At Mosaic, we believe that whether through interfaith dialogue, service, art, or even a view from space, meaningful encounters can transform how we see ourselves, one another, and our place in the world.

A conversation that probably wouldn't have happened in October.

At our final Bridges gathering in May, a small group of youth from Gann Academy and Al Huda Society were sitting together talking about what comes next after graduation. One of the youth mentioned she was planning to do military service in Israel. The others started asking her questions, not to be combatic, but from a place of curiosity. They wanted to understand what it meant to her

It was a really thoughtful conversation. And it happened because those youth had spent eight months together. Shared meals, site visits, honest conversations. By May, they knew each other well enough to go there.

That's what Bridges is designed to do. Not to avoid hard topics, but to build the kind of relationships where hard topics are actually possible.

We're returning from the Tri-Faith Initiative's Race, Religion and Social Justice Conference inspired, energized, and grateful.

This week, Mosaic had the opportunity to share our session, "From Text to Expression: Youth Exploring Justice and Identity Through Art," highlighting how our Bridges program uses scriptural reasoning, dialogue, and creative expression to help young people explore identity, build relationships across differences, and engage issues of justice.

We are thankful to everyone who joined our session, asked thoughtful questions, and shared their own experiences. We were especially grateful to learn from so many practitioners, educators, faith leaders, and community builders committed to creating a more just and connected world.

Thank you to the Tri-Faith Initiative for convening this important gathering and creating space for meaningful dialogue, learning, and collaboration.

The future is brighter when young people are equipped to bridge divides, embrace complexity, and work together for the common good.

Some of our favorite moments from the year. There were a lot of them!

What I keep coming back to is how much of this work happens quietly. A shared meal. Someone asking a question they might have kept to themselves the year before. A youth who realizes they don't have to have all the answers to lead a conversation.

We got to witness a lot of that this year. Grateful for every youth, educator, and community member who showed up!

🙏 Reminder: our June campaign is running all month! If this kind of work resonates with you, we'd love your support.

We couldn't do this work alone. So much of what makes Mosaic possible is the trust of the schools and faith communities who open their doors to us.

Grateful for every partner who made this year possible.

💙 And a quick reminder — our June campaign is on! We're raising $50,000 for next year's programming, with the first $10k matched.

Every gift makes a difference.

Art, Spirituality, and Connectedness

Last weekend, two members of Mosaic’s Youth Board Advisors joined Director of Programs Kimberly Mack for a special field trip exploring the intersections of art, faith, culture, and human connection.

The group began their journey at the Christian Science Plaza, where they experienced the incredible Mapparium and reflected on how our world is interconnected across cultures, religions, and communities. They then traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to engage with works of art that inspire conversation, curiosity, and deeper understanding of the human experience.

Experiences like these help our youth see the many ways creativity, spirituality, and dialogue can bring people together across differences. Thank you to our Youth Board Advisors for their thoughtful participation and willingness to learn from the world around them!
