Massachusetts Appleseed Center for Law and Justice

Massachusetts Appleseed Center for Law and Justice Promoting access to justice and opportunity for all through research, collaboration, and advocacy.

We fight to expand equitable access to justice and opportunity for Massachusetts families and youth through multiple strategies, including policy analysis and research, coalition building, education and training, community organizing, and advocacy. We take our work wherever we believe we can do the most good, whether that’s in the courthouse, at the State House, in schools, or in the community. We

research and identify the ways in which the justice system, schools, and government agencies are systematically failing our most vulnerable residents and collaborate with community partners to identify solutions and advocate for their implementation. Operating as a critical resource for peer organizations and policymakers, we work in partnership with communities to shape policy, convene stakeholders, and advance initiatives that move us closer to a Massachusetts that is just, equitable, and inclusive. Our mission is intentionally expansive, enabling us to remain dynamic, respond to emerging and enduring issues of injustice, and go where our communities need us most. We bring data collection and robust analysis, broad networks of partners, and pro bono legal support to our advocacy. Throughout our work, we are guided by our commitment to centering the lives and voices of people most affected. We seek systems-level change so all Massachusetts families and youth can exercise their legal rights, build pathways out of poverty and crisis, and achieve meaningful access to essential services and opportunities.

Truancy is often treated as a behavioral issue when it is actually a systemic access to justice issue. Our newest blog explores how language barriers, communication challenges, and lack of support can turn school attendance into a legal issue for families across Massachusetts. It’s time to stop giving families flashlights and start turning on the lights.

The Justice in Action Volunteer Corps (JAVC) continues to grow!

Over the past several weeks, volunteers have been participating in trainings on the Massachusetts Homeless Youth Handbook, legal rights education, and community outreach best practices. Our volunteer leads are nearing the completion of their training and are almost ready to begin outreach efforts across Massachusetts, helping connect communities with free legal rights resources.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us so far. We’re excited to put this training into action and continue expanding access to legal rights information across the Commonwealth.

Interested in getting involved? Contact Xiomara Alfaro-Martínez, Director of Partnerships & Engagement, at [email protected] to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

Last Tuesday, Massachusetts Appleseed’s Board of Directors came together for our annual Board Retreat to reflect on our progress, discuss opportunities and challenges ahead, and help shape our strategic direction for the future.

Board members engaged in thoughtful conversations about strengthening our impact, ensuring long-term sustainability, and identifying ways to support and advance our mission. Together, we explored how Massachusetts Appleseed can continue expanding access to justice and legal rights education for communities across the state of Massachusetts.

Last month, Massachusetts Appleseed traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the 2026 Appleseed Network Conference, joining justice centers from across the US and Mexico for three days of learning, collaboration, and connection.

Hosted by Oklahoma Appleseed, the conference brought together advocates, attorneys, and organizers committed to advancing justice in their communities. We had the opportunity to share ideas, learn from innovative programs across the network, and explore new approaches to addressing challenges related to education, youth homelessness, access to justice, criminal justice reform, and more.

We are grateful to Oklahoma Appleseed for their warm hospitality and to our fellow Appleseed partners for the opportunity to learn from one another. The conversations, partnerships, and ideas sparked in Tulsa will continue to strengthen our work here in Massachusetts as we strive to expand access to justice and opportunity for all.

Happy Pride Month! At Massachusetts Appleseed, we believe that access to information is access to justice. That is why we are proud to share our new LGBTQ+ Know Your Rights Webinar through our On Demand Legal Rights Education Hub, a free resource designed to help LGBTQ+ young people, advocates, educators, service providers, and community members better understand their legal rights in Massachusetts.

We are also committed to making these resources as accessible as possible. Later this month, we will be releasing a Spanish language version of the LGBTQ+ webinar so that even more young people and families can access the information they need.

Please join us in welcoming Kate Bishop as our summer fellow!

Kate is a rising senior at Boston College and a member of the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program, where she studies Transformative Education and Sociology with a minor in Restorative Justice.

Through her work with the Boston College Prison Education Program, Suffolk County House of Corrections, Pine Street Inn, and the Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition, Kate has supported educational programming, facilitated workshops, and helped expand access to resources for individuals impacted by the justice system. Her experience reflects a deep commitment to education, advocacy, and community-centered change.

As our Gabelli Presidential Scholars Fellow, Kate will be supporting Massachusetts Appleseed’s legal rights education and advocacy initiatives throughout the summer. We are excited to have her on the team and look forward to the contributions she will make in the months ahead.

When she’s not working or studying, Kate enjoys hiking, backpacking, painting, and crafting.

Last month, we were proud to co-lead a Housing & Foster Care Know Your Rights presentation for volunteers at Boston CASA!

Together, we explored critical topics impacting young people in the foster care system, from what attorneys should be doing to support youth through transition planning, to DCF benefits that can help fund higher education, to tenant rights and housing protections.

A special thank you to our incredible partners Katharine Klubock (CPCS) and Amy Chenette (DCF) for sharing their expertise, and to the dedicated Boston CASA volunteers for the meaningful advocacy they provide to young people navigating the foster care system.

We’re excited to continue the conversation and return in July for a Know Your Rights presentation on education.

Interested in bringing a no-cost Know Your Rights training to your organization? We offer presentations on topics covered in the Massachusetts Homeless Youth Handbook. Reach out to [email protected] to learn more.

Last week, Massachusetts Appleseed was proud to host our Massachusetts Homeless Youth Legal Network (MHYLN) Bi-Annual Gathering, bringing together advocates, legal professionals, service providers, and community partners committed to improving outcomes for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness across Massachusetts.

The morning was filled with meaningful conversation, shared updates, and collaborative brainstorming on how we can strengthen access to legal support, deepen partnerships, and drive systems change for young people across the Commonwealth.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared your expertise, and continue to show up for youth experiencing homelessness. This work is stronger because of this community.

Please join us in thanking Sara Milesi, our Spring 2026 Legal Education and Policy Intern, for the energy and heart she brought to Massachusetts Appleseed this semester!!

Over the past few months, Sara brought curiosity, compassion, and dedication to our team. From supporting our legal education and policy work to contributing to conversations around social justice issues like language access, youth homelessness, and education equity, Sara made a meaningful impact in her time with us.

Her thoughtfulness and willingness to jump in wherever needed made her a wonderful addition to the office, and we are so grateful for all she brought to the team.

Sara, thank you for your hard work, your passion for justice, and the joy you brought to us this spring. We’re excited to see all that’s ahead for you!
