We would like to give a shout out to a recent group of workers who ratified on their FIRST UNION CONTRACT! On August 20th, agricultural workers at Mayflower Medicinal, a cannabis grow facility in Fall River, voted 10-4 to accept their negotiated contract.

The workers at Mayflower first reached out to UFCW 328 in April of 2024 and delivered a letter to their employer on May 6th requesting voluntary recognition. They were met with a legal battle based on job classifications and didn't finalize their unit until July 2nd, 2024. After this huge victory, they jumped into negotiations over the next 13 months, led by dedicated workers on a committee to represent their peers.

From all of us at UFCW Local 328, we are happy to have these workers as part of our union family, and look forward to representing them for years to come!

There are loopholes in the existing RI Cannabis Act that takes money away from the Social Equity Assistance Fund and leaves these licenses susceptible to being taken advantage of those with wealth.

The Cannabis Policy Coalition will be speaking on May 8th, 2025 at the RI State House on proposals to safeguard this fund, help give it more funding, as well as creating an additional fund that's focused on reinvesting in the communities, while still protecting the 6 licenses set aside for social equity. Come join them to show your support in protecting those who have been disproportionately effected by the war on drugs.

Exciting news! The hardworking Patient Sales Associates and Inventory Specialists at Commonwealth Alternative Care in Brockton, MA voted to form their union, with an overwhelming 11-2 majority victory! They join our union family at UFCW 328 and the growing movement of unionized cannabis workers across the country. They stand in together in solidarity and will enter negotiations with the company to secure stability and fair treatment.

Niko O’Brien, a PCA at the Brockton location who helped lead the organizing effort in Brockton, stated after the win, “During my interview, I was told that our motto at CAC is “pivot”. This is in reference to that one scene from Friends, where Ross yells at Chandler to pivot the couch they are carrying up a narrow NY apartment stairwell. The interviewer explained that because the cannabis industry was so new and becoming increasingly competitive, things or processes that work well one day might not work as well the next, therefore we have to pivot and change course. While I believe that change is sometimes necessary to be the best we can be, I believe that workers’ rights and respect should never be pivoted on.” He also added, “I’m looking forward to negotiations for our contact so we can finally have some consistency in our ever changing industry.”

Leanne Ferrara, a PCA at the location, said, “The union means advocacy, taking care of the individuals that need it most, not the rich getting richer. I’ve taken on the role of advocate for many years now within the confines of the public school system, and I find that role of advocate to be an important one that’s not to be taken lightly. I look forward to the future with my amazing colleagues at CAC.”

Julie Nobrega, another PCA, added, “We have learned that when you STAND TOGETHER, no matter how small your crew may be no one can defeat you. You don’t have to feel despair. You can put feelings into action and when you see the bond that develops amongst your team when the wheels are in motion, the amount of pride and validation you feel is incomparable.”

Congratulations to the entire team at CAC and welcome to our union family!
