Happy Friday! A home improvement program home rehab story sharing series, part #1 the journey begins.

A low-income client, with health challenges sought assistance for her aging single-family home was referred from the Fuel Assistance office reached out to the Home Improvement Program, HIP for home renovation assistance. She was unbanked due to her high debt to income ratio and a lack of financial capacity to repay. In the face of limited resources, challenging health setbacks and emotional overwhelm HIP staff diligently helped her explore various options which included selling, getting a reverse mortgage, or renovating her existing home. After careful consideration and a conversation with the HECM lender, she opted to improve her home with the long term goal of aging in place and cherishing the longstanding memories and remaining in the community she knows and loves.

HIP appreciate all its funding partners, which helps us help well deserving families remain safely in their homes.

Happy Giving Tuesday and happy post thanksgiving!

The Home Improvement Program at HRI staff love to help clients enjoy their happy homes. This post, we are showing a most recent "happy HIP client" who HIP helped her obtain, process affordable financing to repair her home, empowered her to learn, understand how to vet and choose the best contractors for her project, process her loan and oversaw the project from beginning to the end, The client offered staff a stellar testimonial and felt proud of her new space. By the way, she came as a referral from another client we helped who lived in the same building. Word of mouth is one of HIP's most superpower, along with partner referral including the City of Cambridge Community Development Department (Official) City of Cambridge (Official) and other. Truly HIP's greatest satisfaction are client stories which are the backbone of our mission, vision and value.

Protecting older adults is one of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) top priorities as well as the Home Improvement Program at HRI goal.

A new report to Congress tells how the agency tackled fraud, scams, and other issues affecting older adults over the last year. It’s been a busy year at the FTC, so what are some of the highlights?

One of the cases with the biggest impact on older adults was the FTC’s case against Publishers Clearing House (PCH), charging that the company used “dark patterns” to mislead people about how to enter sweepstakes drawings, making them think they had to buy something to win (or increase their chances of winning). A court required PCH to turn over $18.5 million to the FTC to use for customer refunds.

That's why the BBB Boston and the Home Improvement Program at HRI has teamed up to bring you scam prevention educational sessions.

Look out for short information videos with tips, tricks, tools and resources so you can know how to protect yourself and see, spot, prevent and slam scams.
