Re-nourish is a nonprofit organization that advocates awareness & action for sustainable systems thinking in the communication design community. We are, at the moment, just two people who want to make things better. We believe that 'good design' values people, the environment, and improves lives. Instead design is currently on an unsustainable path centered on overconsumption, waste, and ignoring

the natural systems around us. Re-nourish aims to help the practicing communication designer, educator and student make positive greener and pragmatic design decisions. Our tools and resources are created to be straightforward and implementable now. Our case studies, articles and blog provide inspiration and knowledge to help designers implement more sustainable strategies. After all, to 'renourish' means to foster, cherish, and strengthen positive growth. Those are our goals and we need help making sure it happens. This will take a committed community. Join us.

In 2011, I watched the film "Garbage Warrior" with my graphic design students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We embraced Michael Reynold's (Earthship Biotecture) ethos to design & build with the important materials (glass, paper, metal, etc.) that society considers "waste" after use.

🌿 There is no waste in nature. Humans sadly invented it and continue to make it worse. This is one reason why I still do what I do in life. hashtag hashtag

Thirteen years later, I had the absolute privilege to interview Michael with Abigail Zhuk on the Climify Podcast and he refreshed my memory about how awesome his work is. He is bucking the standard method hashtag and construction companies use to create our homes. Michael calls his houses hashtag .

🌰 They feature:
- Use of natural and recycled materials
- Passive heating and cooling
- Solar energy
- Food production
- Water harvesting
- Contained sewage treatment

We're happy to support the amazing Climify Podcast!

A new episode came out today with Cam Burkins talking with Melinda Adams.

Dr. Melinda Adams to go deeper into her life and work. In particular, this episode explores solastalgia (or climate anxiety) and soliphilia (cures or mitigation methods against that anxiety). Melinda shares Traditional Ecological Practices that provide hope for our collective future, which will surely be Matriarchal!

❤️‍🩹 How can we feel our positive strides in 2023 made any difference if GHG emissions still rose? Good question. It’s a really really good question.

My answer, and that of climate experts like Dr. Jacquelyn Gill, is to realize that a continued determined push forward to reduce our GHG emissions is the only logical path we can take. Apathy and embracing the status quo (like a morning drive-thru at Starbucks) will undoubtedly backfire and help the corporations and politicians that help cause this mess to win.

As Dr. Gill says,
"…1.5 is better than two degrees. Two degrees is better than 2.5 than three than four, right? My God, every fraction of a degree is worth fighting for."

So, to find more inspiration for improving my climate actions, I reached out to three thought leaders from the past three seasons of the Climify Podcast.

Looking for volunteers for Season 4 of Climify!

Position Title: Design Researcher

Position Description:
In season four of Climify, I plan to speak with six design educators. These design educators have already embraced climate science and justice in their research and pedagogy and my discussions with them will focus on their role in climate action and justice in addition to how they are bringing those topics effectively into the classroom and their research. Each episode will include not only the interview, but also a deeper journalistic dive into what they share; to help better define terminologies, resources, and the history of what they discuss.

The Design Researcher will help explore the full story beyond the interview. The Design Researcher will listen to the interview and locate interesting points where further research into the guest's jargon, life story, design work, methodologies, etc. can be researched to tell a deeper story woven into the interview. Think "Ooligies" podcast. In addition, they will help create questions for the guest and appear on the program. The ideal student would also be interested in climate or the environment as part of their future work or research to help make season 4 informative and entertaining.

Designers and design educators! How do you best create a positive impact in communities? What does environmental justice look like?

---
In this fifth episode of season 3, Pamela Fann, CDP, CDT Fann joins me to share her journey from Corporate America to diversity, inclusion, integration, and climate activist and entrepreneur. She shares how she defines restorative design, environmental justice, and how best we use their principles to tackle the entangled issues of racism and our climate crisis.
