BREAKING NEWS: Brigham Labor Dispute Escalates After Hospital Sends Cease-and-Desist Notice to Nurses' Union

The labor dispute between Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) has intensified after hospital leadership issued a cease-and-desist notice to the union over noise levels on the picket line. The move comes just days after more than 4,000 nurses completed a historic one-day strike and remain locked out through July 13.

According to the hospital, the notice was issued because loud chanting, whistles, drums, and amplified sound near hospital entrances could interfere with patient care and the healing environment. Hospital officials said they are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful atmosphere for patients, visitors, and staff while the labor dispute continues.

The Massachusetts Nurses Association strongly criticized the action, arguing that peaceful picketing is a protected activity during a labor dispute. Union leaders said nurses will continue demonstrating for a fair contract, emphasizing their demands for competitive wages, safe staffing, improved nurse retention, and better working conditions.

Despite ongoing mediation efforts, negotiations have not yet produced a new agreement. With the lockout still in effect, both sides remain firmly divided, and the dispute continues to draw attention across the healthcare community in Massachusetts.

As the July 13 lockout deadline approaches, many nurses say they are ready to return to caring for patients immediately, while urging hospital leadership to resume meaningful negotiations and reach a fair contract that supports both caregivers and patient safety.
