HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team)

HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team) HEET's mission is to drive systems change through and ethical and efficiency thermal energy transition. Anyone can sign up to volunteer for our events.

You gain hands-on skills on how to lower energy use. According to a survey of our volunteers, 76% go on to use these skills in their own homes. We do a thorough audit before each event to make sure we pinpoint the work that will effectively lower energy use. Our audits include a blower door test, combustion analysis, and more. We continue to monitor the energy use of the buildings we work in to en

sure we have been successful. On average we have lowered electricity use by 10% and heating by 11% (controlling for heating degree days, or how cold the winter was). All this is accomplished in just three hours of team labor.

It was a fabulous Friday speaking with members of this year's PowerCorps Boston Cohort. We shared some insights into the work HEET is doing and, along with the Housing Authority, provided a tour of Franklin Field - the future site of a networked geothermal energy system. We look forward to opportunities where we can engage with young adults to talk collectively about our energy future. PowerCorpsBOS provides young adults with training, career readiness support, and connections to employers in the green industry.

The transition from gas to geo has become a nationwide, recognized solution to solving climate change and HEET has been a major contributor to these efforts for years through lots of collaborative external and internal teamwork. With our very own being a finalist, this is an incredible recognition to this cause. To all our partners in this movement, lets keep the momentum going towards a thermal energy transition!

Zeyneb Magavi now executive director of HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team), has led efforts to transition utility infrastructure from gas to geothermal energy.

Check out the other climate leaders who made our list: https://grist.org/fix/grist-50/2024/ -magavi

Yesterday, future geothermal drillers launched their clean energy careers via a two-week drilling tutorial coordinated by HEET, International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA), and delivered by Brock Yordy, co-founder of the Geothermal Drillers Association! Thank you to GBH for capturing the voice of the story behind the story. And congratulations to all the future drillers. Without your participation, the transition to a clean energy future in Massachusetts would not be possible. As said by a participant: "There's not a lot of drillers (geothermal) in our state, that's like...setting us up for the next 20 years to have a solid career and be stable."

An expanding geothermal workforce is quickly taking shape, but companies say they are desperate to fill a dearth of open positions.

Thank you The Christian Science Monitor for so thoughtfully capturing the spirit of the story behind the story leading up to the the country's first ever utility-led geothermal pilot program in Framingham, MA this past June!

The largest gas utility company in Massachusetts partnered with environmental activists to create the country’s first pilot program in which a major utility delivers geothermal energy.

Help Us Crush Carbon

Did you know that until 2016, utilities were not required to fix any leak—no matter how large—unless it was considered potentially explosive? Many of the leaks in the Greater Boston area were first reported decades ago and still have not been fixed. These gas leaks emit a potent greenhouse gas, support fracking, and have caused millions of dollars in damage to municipal trees. In 2014, HEET started creating public, zoomable maps of gas leaks in Massachusetts and pressuring the utilities to fix them.

HEET conducted a study with the three largest utilities in MA, which confirmed that we can cut methane emissions from gas leaks in half by finding and fixing just 7% of the leaks. The study also established fast, reliable and effective methods for identifying the biggest leaks so they can be prioritized for repair.

Common Goals, Uncommon Partners

HEET is now working with utilities to implement our Shared Action Plan that includes data transparency, verifying repairs, and reassessing results.
