Matahari Women Workers' Center

Matahari Women Workers' Center A Boston based women's organization working to end exploitation of women and femme workers

Through grassroots organizing and advocacy, Matahari works from a foundation of social justice, immigrant empowerment, racial solidarity and community centeredness. We recognize that our communities are impacted by interpersonal, institutional and structural oppression and inequity. We believe that solutions to end violence, intervene and offer safety nets are embedded in our own resources, famili

es, schools and neighborhoods. We are committed to forging creative approaches and renew time tested indigenous ones that break us out of isolation, challenge stagnant practices and energize and catalyze the power that emerges from the synergy of the goodness of humanity.

Showing up for workers’ rights means showing up for each other. 💪🏽

At Matahari, organizing is not just about fighting back—it’s about moving forward together. Whether we're gathering in living rooms, speaking out at City Hall, or breaking bread after a long day, we know that our collective power is rooted in care, courage, and community.

Because when workers lead, justice follows.

Reflecting on the powerful Community Fellows Retreat we hosted last year, where our leadership team came together to strengthen trust, transparency, and alignment. These moments are crucial for workers in Boston, as they provide a space to reflect, recharge, and renew our commitment to advocacy and empowerment. 🌟

Events like this are vital for reinforcing our shared vision, strengthening bonds, and planning for consistent, impactful engagement throughout the year. They allow us to ensure that our work remains rooted in solidarity, building power for workers in our community every day.

Throwing it back to an inspiring moment when Matahari was invited to engage with Simmons University’s Women & Gender Studies Department! 💬

We were honored to have our Member Leader and Board Member, Lydia Nakiberu, and Jessica Oliveira, our Director of People & Operations, speak on the vital intersections of gender and labor. 🌟

This engagement was part of Simmons' annual Bread and Roses event, where we commemorated the historic 1912 Lawrence, MA immigrant worker strike. It was a powerful opportunity to connect our history with the ongoing fight for workers' rights.

We’re so excited to attend the 12th Annual Grassroots Organizing Picnic on June 28, 2025! 🦞✨ It’s a lobster picnic to fund Boston’s movements for justice and liberation, bringing together 15 organizations on the frontlines of racial, economic, and climate justice. A day to pause, share in the joy, and celebrate the abundance of our community. We can’t wait to connect with all the amazing folks working toward a better future!

Mark your calendars! 🗓️

At Matahari, outreach is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it's knocking on doors, holding community meetings, or engaging with workers in the spaces where they spend their time, we believe in meeting people where they are. Our outreach efforts help us build relationships, hear the stories of workers, and ensure that everyone has access to the support, resources, and education they need to demand justice.

Let’s keep organizing, advocating, and building power in our communities.

Meet Zoe—fierce, resilient, and unafraid to speak truth to power. 💪🏽✨

After Hurricane Maria, Zoe came to Boston in search of safety—but instead found abusive working conditions and wage theft. When she bravely spoke out about the mistreatment of workers at the Massachusetts Teachers Association, she was fired.

But Zoe didn’t back down. With Matahari and Justice at Work, she took legal action and turned pain into power.

Zoe reminds us that no one should have to risk their health or livelihood for dignity. Her story is a call to action: stand with workers. Demand accountability. Build the future we deserve.

to when the Healing Justice Walk took us to Beacon Hill!

Together, Matahari members walked, reflected, and grounded ourselves in community—right in the heart of Boston’s political power center. Because healing is resistance, and taking up space as immigrant women and femmes of color is part of how we build justice from the inside out.
