Empowering mature adults to serve the poor, advocate for justice, and deepen their faith through Ignatian spirituality.

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) opened its New England Region in January, 2009. The first Ignatian Volunteers were 11 men and women from assorted walks of life and different educational backgrounds, looking to put their life experiences, talents and time at the disposal of the poor in Boston, Worcester, and Providence, and surrounding communities. In 2017-2018, 43 women and men are serving in d

iverse neighborhoods in Boston, Brockton, Framingham, Dartmouth, Easton, Worcester, and Providence. These volunteers are supported by one another and by “spiritual reflectors” whose task is to help the volunteers look at their service and to reflect upon its deeper meaning for themselves and for those whom they serve. New England Ignatian volunteers teach, mentor and advise in a variety of educational programs; provide services to potentially homeless elders; co-ordinate volunteers who work in direct service; educate and locate resources for adult students and immigrants; offer administrative, development and HR support to non-profit staff; coordinate food and furniture outreach to families in need and organize retreats for homeless and formerly homeless women and men.

My mom, who died in February, left the money she had saved up over her 94 years, to my sister and me. And she knew and was happy that my share would go to the Jesuits East Province. Of course, that would happen by virtue of my vows of poverty anyway. But my mom was so grateful to the Jesuits for so many reasons. Most of the money went to the Province itself, but some went to Outreach (for the Eleanor Spano Martin scholarships for students) and some to Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, Mass, for something very special to my mom, my sister and me: a garden in her honor, which you see here. It has already begun, in the pinks and blues she loved, and soon it will have phlox, which her own mother's garden had. It's already so beautiful and we're grateful to Eastern Point for doing such a wonderful job. If you see what my sister and I are calling Eleanor's Garden, please remember my mom in your prayers.

And if you'd like to donate anything in her name to Jesuits East, Outreach or Eastern Point, I'm sure each of these places would be grateful.

Spotted this clever "Lean In - Be a Jesuit" sticker at Peter Faber House recently. As Fr. James Martin, SJ has pointed out, the traditional path to becoming a Jesuit is a serious commitment—12+ years of study, theology, full-time ministry, and yes, maybe a little Latin.

Mature volunteers are one of the greatest assets nonprofits have. They bring years of experience, wisdom, reliability, and a deep commitment to serving others. Their knowledge helps organizations grow, their mentorship strengthens communities, and their generosity creates lasting impact.
