Today, WorldBoston says goodbye to our Citizen Diplomacy Programs Associate Intern, Jess Thompson.

In their almost 6 months at WolrdBoston, Jess notably helped coordinate meetings for 95 IVLP visitors, representing 47 different countries.

This week, we bid a fond farewell to Harrison, WorldBoston's Director of Global Engagement Programs and Operations. Security diplomacy is one of many sub-fields within the wider world of diplomacy. Security diplomacy focuses on maintaining global stability through the improvement of law enforcement training programs, counterterrorism initiatives, crisis response efforts, and more. WorldBoston hosted three groups on this topic in May, with two IVLP groups on U.S. Leadership in Law Enforcement and one Custom Visitor Program (CVP) entitled the Law Enforcement and Security Exchange Program (LESEP). Together, these groups totaled to 45 visitors from 26 different countries.

Meetings ranged from discussions with professors and university police officers to educational briefings with representatives from the state and local government. U.S. Leadership in Law Enforcement delegates spoke with sociology and criminal justice professors from Suffolk University and from Northeastern University for a joint meeting examining correctional environments. They also met with the Massachusetts State Police on security services at Massport and Logan International Airport, followed by a walk through of the Boston Police Department (Official) approach to ensuring public safety at major events in the city with former BPD Commissioner Billy Evans.

The LESEP delegation was hosted by Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy and Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) for two days of workshops examining law enforcement training processes. Both organizations provide instructions for new recruits, and while Northeastern University’s program emphasizes officer public engagement practice, the MPTC offers courses for established law enforcement professionals to further their careers and education. The group also spoke with representatives of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for insights into prosecutorial approaches and an overview of the law enforcement and justice system in Massachusetts.

In addition to these informative meetings, these visitors also had the opportunity to learn about Boston’s history on a Freedom Trail tour and experience how sports are a key part of our community’s identity by attending a Boston Red Sox game.

For the last of our new team members, WorldBoston is excited to introduce WorldBoston's summer interns.

Please welcome Gracen Lashnits, a rising junior at the Pardee School of Global Studies, Boston University, studying International Relations and Economics, and Charlotte Trodden, a rising junior at the College of William & Mary, studying International Relations and Philosophy.

Gracen will work with our executive leadership team on their efforts to grow fundraising, particularly through strategic communications, outreach, and planning and executing public events. Charlotte will support our Citizen Diplomacy team with their diplomatic efforts to advance global cooperation through organizing professional exchanges and forging connections with local counterparts.

The new team members will continue to develop WorldBoston’s growing diplomatic network, advancing meaningful global connections through the universal language of sport.

As 2026 marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence in 1776, WorldBoston continues to ensure that all our visiting delegations have the opportunity to participate in the Freedom250 celebrations. Freedom250 is a nationwide initiative to commemorate American values through public celebrations and highlighting historic sites and activities that are core parts of our nation’s identity.

In Massachusetts, 250-themed events this summer range from the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th from the Old State House to the Grand Parade of Sail as part of Sail250 taking place across the country.

The state-wide celebratory initiative MA250 highlights the Commonwealth’s role as the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. For WorldBoston, this includes organizing tours of the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, Freedom Trail Foundation, meetings with the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT), and more for the visitors.

Yesterday, WorldBoston hosted Great Decisions: The Future of U.S. - European Relations, featuring Ruth Bajada and Ambassador (ret.) Mark Libby. Thank you to Ruth and Mark for providing expert insights and engaging with the WorldBoston community, both in-person and on Zoom.

We also want to thank the Center for the Study of Europe - Boston University and the Boston University - Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies (Pardee School) for hosting us, along with Vesko Garcevic and Scott Taylor.
