The Operations Research and Impact Evaluation (ORIE) Project is an independent component of the six-year UK Aid funded Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria (WINNN) programme which seeks to improve the nutritional status of 6.2 million children under five years across the five northern Nigerian states of Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, and Yobe. The overall purpose of ORIE is to fill important gaps in knowledge about the causes of and optimal responses to undernutrition in Northern Nigeria. ORIE undertakes various kinds of research and evaluation to this end.

One of ORIE’s objectives is to strengthen capacity to undertake and disseminate research to improve nutrition in the Northern states of Nigeria. As part of this, ORIE wishes to fund researchers to undertake high quality research which will contribute to improving maternal and child nutrition in the Northern states of Nigeria, and support them by offering training, networking activities and experienced mentoring. We will award three or four grants with a value of up to £70,000 each for a period of between six months and two years. The grants should address the research topics listed in the call document, or other related topics if applicants are able to make a strong case for their potential to improve policies or programmes to improve maternal and child nutrition in Northern Nigeria.

Nevin Scrimshaw’s beloved wife of 72 years, Mary (Goodrich) died on June 18th. Mrs. Scrimshaw began her graduate career in genetics at the University of Rochester, working with the renowned Curt Stern, and transitioned to anthropology after 12 years in Guatemala with her husband. After graduate work at Brandeis University, she worked extensively in nutritional anthropology, and was one of the founders of that field.
She will be greatly missed by all.

A CeSSIAM project has been featured in the HUFFINGTON POST online! Congratulations to Rosario!!!

For Rosario, listening to people and involving them in the initiatives that they identify as important is a given when you see people as the key agents of change in their own lives. This is something she learned to do many years ago.
