This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we’re standing together for a .

Periods should never be a barrier to dignity, opportunity, or education.

Yet for adolescent girls in rural Kenya served by Flying Kites, a lack of access to pads and underwear means missing school simply because they have their period.

Girls miss an average of four school days every month — adding up to 165 days of lost learning over four years of school.

But together, we can change that.

Today, your gift of $27 can provide one girl with a full year’s supply of pads and underwear — helping her stay in school, learn with confidence, and pursue her future without interruption.

Because no girl should have to choose between managing her period and getting an education.

At Flying Kites, we believe every girl deserves the chance to learn, lead, and thrive.

Through our school-based Girls United Clubs, led by trained female teachers, we equip girls with knowledge, skills, and support around health, well-being, and leadership. These spaces help girls build confidence, speak up in class, stay in school, and grow into leaders in their communities.

But this work only happens with a strong, steady community behind it.

That’s why we created Roots, our Monthly Giving Program.

When you join with a monthly gift of $25, you’re not just making a donation — you’re helping ensure more girls have the resources and support they need to shape their own futures.

Join Roots this month and receive a jar of farm-fresh honey, harvested from the Flying Kites Academy farm in Kenya — a sweet reminder of the impact you’re helping grow!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Meet Jackline Mwendwa, Programs Manager 🌟

Jackline is from Meru County, Kenya, and her passion for education and community development began early. As a first-born, she learned to care for others, and the teachers and mentors who guided her through school inspired her commitment to empowering learners — especially girls — to reach their full potential.

Jackline joined Flying Kites because of our strong focus on girls’ empowerment, gender equity, and holistic GBV prevention. She was drawn to a team intentionally working to create lasting, systems-level impact in communities.

At Flying Kites, Jackline serves as a Programs Manager, overseeing the planning, implementation, and monitoring of programs across our school network. Her work includes training and supporting teachers and program staff, managing logistics, tracking data and impact, leading Gender Equity and GBV prevention workshops, and collaborating with partners to strengthen child protection systems in schools and communities.

✨ What excites her most is being in the field — training teachers, engaging directly with learners and stakeholders, and seeing real change take place. Watching girls grow in confidence, gain skills, and actively participate in their learning and communities is deeply fulfilling.

🌱 Jackline is especially impacted by seeing how programs like Girls United empower learners with accurate information on menstrual health and create safe spaces for girls to share challenges, including GBV. At the same time, she’s inspired by seeing trained teachers and child protection volunteers work together to ensure survivors receive timely support — proof that strong systems truly protect and empower learners.

💫 Her hope is that every learner feels confident, informed, and supported to make decisions about their bodies, education, and future, and that schools and communities continue strengthening the systems that keep children safe and thriving.

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Meet Beatrice Henu, Programs Coordinator 🌟

Beatrice plays a key role behind the scenes at Flying Kites, ensuring that programs run smoothly and efficiently. As a Programs Coordinator, she supports the planning and coordination of program activities, manages logistics, works closely with multiple teams and partners, and helps ensure all programs are implemented in alignment with organizational goals.

What motivates Beatrice every day is knowing that her work brings clarity and structure — reducing confusion, improving coordination, and creating a strong foundation that allows others to do their work well. She takes pride in knowing that, in many ways, her role indirectly helps create safe, supportive spaces for girls in our partner schools.

Beatrice hopes that the children we serve gain confidence, opportunity, and access to quality education that empowers them to shape their own futures. For the wider community, she hopes for sustainable systems that continue supporting learning and growth long after individual programs end.

My name is Virginia Wanjiru, and Flying Kites has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in this community, spent my childhood at the Flying Kites Children’s Home with my brother, and graduated from Flying Kites Academy (swipe for 10-year-old me!)

After completing my education, I pursued a Diploma in Social Work and Community Development, and today, I serve as Flying Kites’ Programs Coordinator, where I help strengthen our school-based programs that support children and families across our community.

What makes this work especially meaningful to me is the opportunity to give back to the community that shaped my life. I understand firsthand the importance of safe spaces, access to education, and consistent support. Those experiences continue to inspire my commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation — so that more children can not only dream of a different future, but actively build it.

Like all of you who are supporting our work, I believe in a future where every child feels protected, valued, and empowered to pursue education and opportunity — and I’m grateful to play a part in making that vision a reality.

Thank you for being part of the community that makes stories like mine possible.

Yours gratefully,
Virginia Wanjiru
Programs Coordinator

Njeri’s Story ✨

At Flying Kites Network School, Kanamba Primary, a young girl named Njeri* was quietly struggling. She was missing school often, dealing with challenges at home, and feeling isolated and discouraged.

This year, thanks to your support, we expanded our Girls United Clubs to Kanamba. Njeri now has access to Girls United, where she has found something she hadn’t had before: a safe space and a trusted mentor who helped her rebuild her confidence and resilience. Over time, she has grown into a leader amongst her peers, elected school president, and secured admission to a strong secondary school.

“I never believed I could lead or dream so big. Now I know I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”

With support for Girls United, girls like Njeri aren’t just staying in school — they’re stepping up, speaking out, and rising to lead.

Visit www.flyingkites.org/donate to help us expand Girls United to more girls like Njeri.

One Year In: What Our GBV Prevention Data Reveals 📈

One year ago, Flying Kites expanded our Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention Program to 19 public primary schools in our rural Kenyan community, reaching girls and boys in Grades 4 – 9.

Today, we’re beginning to see something foundational taking root: awareness, trust, and the beginnings of behavior change.

📈 92% of Grade 4 - 9 students in our Network demonstrate knowledge of gender-based violence and how to report it after one year of GBV Prevention programming, up from 42% just one year ago (a 119% increase).

📈 After one year of GBV Prevention programming, the percentage of Flying Kites Network students in Grades 4 - 9 who reported gender-based violence increased by 47% (from 32% at baseline to 47% at endline).

At first glance, more reports of violence can feel concerning. But in this context, it signals something important: more children are coming forward.

This increase reflects growing trust in adults, in systems of support, and in their own voices. It shows that students are gaining the knowledge and confidence to recognize harm, understand that it is not acceptable, and believe that it’s safe and worthwhile to speak up.

Together, these shifts point to something foundational taking root: awareness, trust, and the beginnings of behavior change.

There is still much work ahead. But these early indicators matter. They tell us that students are not only learning, they are starting to act.

We’re honored to be featured in the Inclusive Africa Conference 2025 Knowledge Report by inABLE 🙌🏾

Through our partnershiPerkins School for the Blinde Blind, we’ve been working to strengthen education systems so children with disabilities can access quality learning. The trainings deepened educators’ understanding of inclusive practices and reinforced why inclusive classrooms benefit all students. Participants explored how meaningful inclusion begins with a shift in mindset, alongside practical strategies for early identification, active engagement, and tailored support. The sessions also strengthened teachers’ capacity to collaborate with families and communities, recognizing that sustainable inclusion extends beyond the classroom.

We are grateful to be part of a movement advancing accessibility and opportunity for all. Link in bio to read the full Report >>

On Earth Day, we celebrate the beauty and resilience of our planet — and the power of people to protect it. Empowering girls is one of the most transformative ways to care for the Earth. When girls have access to education, leadership opportunities, and resources, they become innovators, environmental stewards, and changemakers in their communities.

Investing in girls is investing in a healthier planet. This Earth Day, we’re celebrating our commitment to protecting the environment and to unlocking the potential of every girl — because when girls thrive, the Earth thrives.
