As we approach the feast, wanted to share….

Thanks to Sr Dorothea Masuret, CSJ for this beautiful reflection, as we anticipate the Feast of St Joseph, on March 19th

Joseph, Embracing a Reality of Mystery
and Uncertainty
by Dorothea Masuret, CSJ

Did you ever have the experience of looking at something 100 times and finally seeing it. This happened to me as I was preparing to offer a Day of Prayer in honor of St. Joseph. In preparing, these questions came to mind: Joseph, what made you trust the Dream? Didn’t it seem outlandish that God would ask you to take Mary for your wife who was of child with the Holy Spirit? How did you know you were on the right track?

The statue that accompanies this article brought me the answer to these questions. Visiting the Chapel at St. Joseph Hall, Framingham where this statue now resides, it was as if Joseph stepped out of the wood and said: “Look what I have in my hands”! The Scroll, the Scriptures! This “seeing” allowed me to see Joseph as one who was able to embrace Mystery and Uncertainty because of his fidelity to the Word of God.

This fidelity lead him to trust the path God was asking him to take as he participated in the great act of Incarnation. His life bore witness to this inspiring line from Rabbi Abraham Heschel:
“To pray is to dream in league with God,
and to envision his holy visions.”
How well Joseph did this! May we imitate his way.

This statue of St. Joseph pictured above was carved by Louisella Walters, CSJ, for the Chapel of Fontbonne Hall, Framingham where the CSJ Scholasticate opened in 1963.
