It was long hard winter, full of very interesting developments in the world of bike advocacy. Many of you have supported or been involved in the Bike Union's work in some way, or perhaps you're hearing of Boston's scrappiest bike organization for the first time, in any case, it's time to celebrate!…

From JP Bikes: Hey all, I know you haven't heard much from us but we're still here. And we're still running our Spring Roll bike parade every year. This year's, our fifth, is just around the corner - this Sunday May 12. At first some showers were forecast, but it's definitely looking more promising.

New this year will be an instructor from the City of Boston's Bike program running a Bike Rodeo, which is a bike safety and skills course for children. As usual, there will be a table of bike decorations and helpers to get your bike all dressed up for the ride. You can also expect the stereo bike to be there leading the parade with some funky tunes, some great snacks from a bunch of local JP stores and cafes, info tables from bike-related orgs like the Boston Cyclists Union and Bikes not Bombs, and pre-ride bike check-ups and demos of family-friendly bikes and accessories from our friends at Ferris Wheels.

So get to the South Street Mall (at South St. and Carolina St) by 10 am to hang out and get ready for the ride, which leaves at 11 am. The ride itself is a 3.6 mile loop up through Hyde and Jackson Squares, down the Southwest Corridor to Forest Hills, and then back up to the start. We'll take it slow, but for those with very small children that may not be able to keep up or do that distance, we ask that you keep them entertained at the start so that both the ride and our ride support team don't get too stretched out.

Keep an eye on our website or our Facebook event page for updates, and hope to see you on Sunday!

On June 2nd, I will be riding my bike in the 2013 Bikes Not Bombs Bike-A-Thon to raise awareness and money for this worthy cause: to use the bicycle as a vehicle for social change! Bikes Not Bombs creates local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The good news is that bicycling and walking are on the rise nationwide. The bad news is that bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities are also rising. Fortunately, more funds are available to fix traffic safety. But, unfortunately, there is no sign of any increase in spending on bike/ped safety. Absent any real target, focus, incentive, leadership, or guidance from the top, states are unlikely to change that unforgivable oversight.

Against that backdrop, it’s critical the USDOT set a specific national goal of reducing bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities. We think a 50% reduction by 2020 is within our reach.

We think it’s essential to hold states accountable to meaningful performance measures that are flexible and focused on outcomes. We know that four states (FL, CA, TX and NY) routinely account for more than 40% of all bicyclist fatalities every year, while several states have none. A good performance measure can be flexible enough to ensure responsibility for bringing down the overall number is appropriately distributed.

Last week, the members of the American Bikes coalition sent a letter to Secretary LaHood asking for a national goal and performance measures to address bicyclist and pedestrian safety specifically.
