Boston Audio Society

Boston Audio Society BAS is an independent nonprofit member-supported organization promoting the highest quality of music reproduction and home theater.

The Boston Audio Society (BAS) is an independent nonprofit member-supported organization promoting the highest quality of music reproduction and home theater, plus high standards in recording and transmission. More than just a local society, the BAS attempts to speak to the worldwide community of audio and video enthusiasts. Founded in 1972, the BAS meets monthly to hear and discuss developments i

n audio, video and related fields. Guest speakers have included prominent engineers, designers, researchers, editors and reviewers, musicians and critics, broadcasters and recording producers. On occasion we hold joint meetings with the Boston chapters of the AES (Audio Engineering Society), SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), and the ASA (Acoustical Society of America). Our noncommercial journal, the B A S Speaker (BASS), includes comprehensive and lively coverage of these meetings as well as reviews, news columns, features, letters and other articles on a variety of audio and video topics. BAS members range from the novice enthusiast to the technically sophisticated. Consumers and producers of audio and video equipment are both represented. Members include freelance journalists, reviewers, and editors at audio and home theater magazines, as well as design engineers, recording engineers, consultants, and researchers who influence product development and the course of the industry. Some members work for manufacturers (as technician, design engineer, or marketing manager), others for dealers. All are devotees — audiophiles and videophiles in the best sense of the term — and tend to be technically and technologically aware, informed about the marketplace, and keenly interested in scientific approaches to audio and video. For these reasons, the BAS and the Speaker are a vital forum. As someone involved in audio or video, you might well find the group an interesting, helpful resource. Our meetings and journal might help shape the future of consumer and pro audio/video even while clarifying its past. Manufacturers, for example, can use the BAS to follow trends and developments, and to gather informed reactions to products and events. At the least we attempt to be a clearinghouse for ideas, helping various parts of the industry and experienced consumers keep in touch with one another. Boston Audio Society September Meeting

Zoom

Sunday September 28 at 2p ET

Guest: Perry Marshall, DIY Live Edge Dipole

(see photo at bottom)

With this meeting BAS members and guests have the opportunity for a remarkable presentation.

Two years ago Perry Marshall earned first place in the Dayton Audio Speaker Design Competition. Open Unlimited Category, Parts Express 2023 Speaker Design Competition: Marshall took part in the Open Unlimited category of the competition, where entrants could use any components and design speakers without cost restrictions. From a field of 59 contestants, Perry’s ‘Live Edge Dipoles’ were awarded first place. One judge commented, “The best way to not sound like a box is: Don’t use a box.”

Marshall will speak on 'Understanding Dipole Room Loading and Frequency Response'. During the Zoom meeting he will present graphs and tables to support why the dipole 'room-loading frequency response' is particularly suited for home playback.

The Live Edge Dipoles were featured on the cover of AudioXpress magazine in January 2021. The accompanying article offers a detailed description of the system as it was at the time: https://audioxpress.com/article/you-can-diy-perry-marshall-the-live-edge-dipolesor or

check it out !!

600 issues of the Melbourne Audio News are now available!

I first made 40 years of the MAN available back in 2014, well now it's another 10 years and 50 years of MANs is at the ready. Actually with Aug 2025 it is exactly 600 issues.

The committee has finally made a decision and left it to me to
distribute the MAN archives, so here we are. I know a few have asked me about this. What's included you ask?

1. Six portfolio pdfs, one for each decade. Includes MANs from July 1974 to August 2025. Each portfolio pdf is searchable. For a complete search throughout the entire history six separate searches would need to be made, not too onerous.

2. (.EXE) An installation file for the latest Acrobat PDF reader. Need
an internet connection for installation only. Accessing through a browser will NOT work for the portfolio pdfs.

3. (.PDF) Klipsch papers SYMPOSIUM ON AUDITORY PERSPECTIVE 1982, 181 pages with opening letter from Paul W Klipsch to the MAC.

4. (.XLS) spreadsheet file showing history of MAN publications from July 1974 to August 2025.

5. (.MP4) 50th Anniversary video shown at 50th Anniversary night in
March 2025 at Box Hill RSL. 8 mins' duration.

6. (.PDF) "The MAC Offers You" pamphlet.

Total is approx 4GB data.

How do I get this ?

Contact Chris Mogford and pay him for how you want it, there are 3 ways you can acquire this once-in-a-lifetime (well, half a century anyway) extravaganza.

1. $25 for a burned Archival quality DVD-R (4.7GB SL)
2. $20 for a 32GB USB drive. (32GB is the minimum available these days @$9 ea.)
3. $10 if you provide the USB drive, minimum 8GB.

Being over 4GB any internet file transferring is cumbersome so no need to ask.

Note that any profit goes to me, not the club, due to the work and
time involved. You're welcome to donate to the club extra if you wish, I'll pass it on.

Wowza!! Come Zoom with us to listen to Boston audio veteran and loudspeaker design & manufacturing mogul Andy Kotsatos --- ex-KLH, -Advent, and most important founder of Boston Acoustics.

Sunday, July 27, 2p ET

Andy Kotsatos: Reflections on a Life in Audio

With his decadeslong career ranging from KLH and Advent to Boston Acoustics, Kotsatos will share stories of the American loudspeaker industry, working alongside Henry Kloss and much later building speaker systems that became the centerpiece of many enthusiasts' home installations with leading performance at accessible prices.

Retired since 2005, Kotsatos has kept an eye on the evolving audio landscape and will offer perspectives about where it's been and where it’s heading.

Expect a thoughtful, no-nonsense discussion about speaker design, industry trends, and what really matters (and what doesn’t) in the pursuit of good sound.
