The Clover chain of 11 veg restaurants released this announcement this evening:
We have some difficult news to share: Clover will be closing our doors this week. Thursday, May 28th will be our final day of restaurant service and meal box delivery.
For 17 years, we have championed local farms and served tens of thousands across Greater Boston. We’re deeply saddened to share this news—for our employees, New England farmers, and you, our guests and supporters.
From the very first day on the MIT food truck in 2008, we’ve loved making food for you. The kind of food that gets under your skin, that you dream about. The kind of food that tells you where it came from. The Chickpea Fritter. The Brussels. The Japanese Sweet Potato. The Zucchini.
The kind of food you can’t get anywhere else.
If you walked into Clover today, the staff are smiling, the tables are sparkling, and the fritters smell amazing, so this news might seem like a surprise.
So what’s happened? We’ve always prized transparency along Clover’s journey. Our current situation isn’t a unique story. In the best of times, restaurants are a tough business: margins are thin, building new restaurants is expensive, and our industry is the most exposed to macroeconomic forces. For years we’ve been navigating the hangover effects of COVID and inflation at every part of our supply chain, but we are proud to have remained committed to sourcing high-quality ingredients from local farms.
Today, everyone is getting hit with rising costs—food prices are up, delivery prices are up, and a hundred other costs are moving in the same direction…even the less flashy things like cardboard and fry oil. Across the board, our ingredients cost 30-50% more today than they did just 2 years ago. Our farmers are experiencing the same pressures we are.
At Clover, we’ve raised prices some, of course, but there is a limit—every one of you is likely thinking about how you save and spend right now too.
We’re deeply saddened about the circumstances. Especially for our 170 employees—you’ll never find a more standout group of dedicated, mission-driven, awesome people who deeply care about their work.
So what now? We still have 2 days together. Share a favorite memory with us. Come in, enjoy some of your favorites, and let the staff know you’ll miss them. We’ll certainly miss all of you.
You helped make Clover beautiful and unique, and in doing so, you helped change the world for the better. We should all be very proud of that.
The Boston Globe covered it here:
The Boston-area chain of 12 restaurants and kiosks, known for its vegetarian dishes and locally sourced ingredients, will close for good at the end of the day on Thursday.
