Teens from all over the state gathered for our 9th annual TIDE this past weekend. Here are some pictures from Friday!
Youth Lead , a non-profit organization is devoted to training young people to become globally aware leaders through workshops focused on the most relevant issues of our time - feminism, identity, race, income inequality, immigration and other topical issues. They engage in meaningful, respectful dialogue and learn to "disagree without being disagreeable" and practice active listening to understand differing perspectives.
TIDE's(Teenage Identity & Diversity Education) Symposium started on May 27th at Emerson College .The theme of the conference was "Lean In: Transforming Conflict through Communication." For three days, students led experiential workshops and trained their peers to lean into and lead difficult conversations around identity. The new President of the Boston City Council Michelle Wu gave the keynote address. Ms. Wu is the first woman and Asian American to hold this post - a historic achievement.
The Symposium also included an address by the dynamic PR maven Colette Phillips, and President of Emerson College Lee Pelton, as well as a panel constituted by: Sylvia C. SpearsVice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Emerson College, Smitty Smith, the Executive Director of the National Center for Race Amity, Liz Skinner, Director of the Hiatt Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement at Beaver Country Day, Sarah Raykhtsaum, a Youth LEAD alum '11 and educator, and Damaria Joyner, a student from Brockton High School.
Janet Penn chaired the conference along with Sylvia Spears.
