10 Reasons to Support the NPF Boston Bowling Event
Use one reason for the next ten days
1. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The five-year relative survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just 6 percent. It is predicted that by 2020, pancreatic cancer will surpass breast and colorectal cancer to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.
2. Have you every had kidney stones or delivered a baby? Some patients with chronic pancreatitis live with this level of pain every day. Others have episodes of this kind of pain. Support NPF as we work with researchers to understand and control this pain.
3. Each year, about 210,000 people in the United States are admitted to the hospital with acute pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas that occurs suddenly and usually resolves in a few days with treatment. Acute pancreatitis can be a life-threatening illness with severe complications.
4. Children get pancreatitis too! One of our patients once told her Mom the only thing she wanted for Christmas was to have her stomach pain go away. Please help us make a difference!
5. In 2014, an estimated 46,420 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States, and approximately 39,590 will die from the disease.
6. The NPF believes that many patients that are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are told by their doctors they only have a few months to live and are never given the option to get treatment or go on a clinical trial. NPF is establishing a national registry to find out more about these patients and improve their life.
7. Many patients with pancreatitis are on disability and unable to live an ordinary life. NPF, through their registry, will learn how we can improve the quality of life for these patients.
8. It is so important that patients with pancreatic disease get treated at medical centers that truly understand this disease and are able to treat the whole patient. That is why NPF is establishing NPF Centers. Help us with this mission!
9. Every year NPF brings together Fellows in gastroenterology and oncology and the best researchers and physicians in the country for a weekend of mentoring and learning more about all diseases of the pancreas. We have made a difference. These fellows stay in the field pf pancreatology and some have now become mentors.
