This week in Washington we are writing to protect civil rights. In recent days, the Executive Branch had ordered federal agencies to halt their use of "disparate impact liability," a policy employed to assess whether policies discriminate against different groups, notably African-Americans, Women, American-Indians, Seniors and the Disabled and Impaired. Federal agencies have been ordered to abandon disparate impact, shredding the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This Administration is pushing to purge Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives that are part of the social fabric of law governing this nation according to The New York Times on May 9th. Dariely Rodrigiuez Chief Counsel for the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under Law said this initiative would have a devastating effect. According to the Times, the disparate impact test has been used to root out discrimination for decades in "areas of employment, housing, policing, education and more." Write the federal government and ask them to reconsider the removal of this critical and pathbreaking civil rights solution and make the case for equality.
