This week in Washington we are writing to protect civil rights. In recent days, the Executive Branch had ordered federal agencies to halt their use of "disparate impact liability," a policy employed to assess whether policies discriminate against different groups, notably African-Americans, Women, American-Indians, Seniors and the Disabled and Impaired. Federal agencies have been ordered to abandon disparate impact, shredding the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This Administration is pushing to purge Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives that are part of the social fabric of law governing this nation according to The New York Times on May 9th. Dariely Rodrigiuez Chief Counsel for the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under Law said this initiative would have a devastating effect. According to the Times, the disparate impact test has been used to root out discrimination for decades in "areas of employment, housing, policing, education and more." Write the federal government and ask them to reconsider the removal of this critical and pathbreaking civil rights solution and make the case for equality. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission & the Department of Justice can be reached by signing here.

This week in Washington we are writing to protect public broadcasting. Many of us tune in to “Fresh Air,” “Talk of the Nation” and “All Things Considered” on the drive home from work to see our families. Can you imagine a world without public broadcasting ? This is what we are facing with this administration striking at PBS & NPR. Recently, Senator Markey of Massachusetts spoke on the floor of the United States Senate saying that the question is not “can we afford it?” Instead, we should ask, “can we afford to live without it?” Many of us grew up on educational programming like “Sesame Street,” “PBS Kids” and “Curious George,” and children learn vital skills like counting and spelling from these educational programs. “News Hour” is a critical and award winning program that brings us news from the frontlines of Washington and we are wealthier as a nation for its efforts. While PBS & NPR will survive scaled back, rural radio stations will experience devastating financial shortfalls and will not be able to broadcast early emergency alerts when natural disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes batter the Midwest & South. For all those that give a damn about Democracy, write Congress to save Big Bird by signing Common Cause’s petition here.

President Trump and his friends in Congress are escalating their war on public media – attempting to slash funding for our Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR). Americans consistently rank PBS and NPR as the most trustworthy networks for news and public affairs because...

This week in Washington we are writing for our first responders. Too often, police officers are asked to do work that falls outside the realm of law enforcement because they are not equipped with the human resources necessary to respond to the diversity of calls that come through the police switchboard. The solutions is simple, diversify our first responders! We can hire more paramedics to deal with mental health calls and social workers to respond to domestic disturbances. According to Barry Friedman, Max Markham and Scarlet Neath writing for the Policing Project at the NYU School of Law, "police officers cannot be expected to resolve every social issue or every dispute or problem," writing on May 30th for The New York Times. Negative outcomes are unnecessary and ineffective when de-escalation training is needed to respond to a domestic dispute. We need to equip police with the resources necessary to respond to calls coming through the police switchboard. Alternative first responders in 130 communities across the United States are responding to domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and disputes between families and neighbors. Call Congress at 202 224 3121 and ask for them to fund First Responders that match the challenges of 21st century law enforcement.

This week in Washington we are writing to shelter the least among us. Housing First programs were once part of a bipartisan consensus, and they are now a target of the administration. According to The New York Times, immigration and an end to Covid Aid have fueled a jump in homelessness. Three-quarters of a million, 750,000 people are homeless on any given night in the United States, an increase of over 18 % since last year according to Jason DeParle writing for the Times. High rents and stagnant wages are taking their toll according to a report released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Without treatment for mental illness and substance abuse and a reduction of funding for Housing First programs, internally diplaced people can't stand a chance. 32,000 Veterans are homeless, when the country needed them they were there, raising their right hand to defend the Constitution "from all enemies foreign and domestic," now it is our opportunity to make good on the promise of American Democracy that no Veteran should ever spend a night sleeping on the streets. Call the Department of Housing and Urban Development @ 202 708 1112 or sign the petition and ask Scott Turner the HUD Secretary to increase rental assistance, treatment for mental illness, expand resources for shelters in the United States and fully fund voucher programs like HUD-VASH, the Department of Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program, sign this petition here https://resist.bot/petitions/PTDEFQ .

Join 16 people. I’m writing to urgently request congressional action regarding the new HUD homelessness policy. It shifts funding away from proven permanent housing… Sign and Resistbot delivers your letter in minutes.

This week in Washington we are writing to protect healthcare. This Administration recently celebrated the signature of One Big Beautiful Bill on the 4th of July yet millions are set to be cut from healthcare funding. Accorrding to The New York Times on May 14th $ 900 billion in Medicaid funding has been cut from the budget. In addition, marketplace premiums are set to double or triple with the expiration of government intervention through the healthcare law. According to aha.org, 70 million Americans receive Medicaid healthcare benefits and any reduction in funding could have devastating effects. Medicare covers 65 million Seniors and Disabled Americans and is as much a healthcare initative as it is an anti-poverty program according to patelco.org. Before it's introduction, senior citizens made up a disproportionate number of the nation's indigent and 1 in 5 Americans were poor. Medicare has reduced that number to 1 in 9. According to CMS.gov, 24 million Americans receive care through the healthcare exchange. The Department of Government Efficiency has taken a buzzsaw to federal healthcare programs and we will give no quarter. Write the United States Senate and demand that they reinstate coverage for our disabled, seniors, workers and impaired here https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/repeal-1

The passage of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill was the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in American history—giving historic tax breaks to the wealthy and worsening income inequality across the country. As the cost of groceries continues to burden people across the country, millions of ...
