What was your favorite read for March?

My favorite read last month was Losin Control by Ladii Nesha 🔥🔥🔥

I loved this book so much!!! Typically long books intimidate me but I read all 617 pages in less than a week. I swear I laughed the entire time! Ladii Nesha is a comedian on the low.

If I had this book in my teens/20s, my love life probably would've turned out differently. Like Marley, I lost loved ones to gun violence and it made me scared to live and love again. Survivor's guilt is no joke!

Now let's talk about Czar aka Julius 😋🥰 I loved me some him! I love when men don't play about their ladies 🙌🏾 When he told Marley, “The reasons I want you have nothing to do with the outside world. You bring me a sense of peace that I want to live in forever" my heart melted.

Czar could have any woman in the world but he chose Marley's authenticity over everything. Ladies that's a reminder to be yourself!!

What I loved the most about this book is that Marley and Czar didn't let their past trauma control their present thoughts, feelings, or actions. They really beat the odds.

I read a quote somewhere that said, "If you're not careful you'll bleed on the person that didn't even cut you." I pray we all heal before getting into new relationships. There's a lot of innocent bystanders getting their heart broken because someone else chose not to heal 💔

👉🏾 Have you read Losin Control yet?? What did you think?

May Book of the Month: The Mothers by

Zoom Discussion Date: June 1st at 8 PM EST

Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett's mesmerizing first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. It begins with a secret.

"All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we'd taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season."

It is the last season of high school life for Nadia Turner, a rebellious, grief-stricken, seventeen-year-old beauty. Mourning her own mother's recent su***de, she takes up with the local pastor's son. Luke Sheppard is twenty-one, a former football star whose injury has reduced him to waiting tables at a diner. They are young; it's not serious. But the pregnancy that results from this teen romance—and the subsequent cover-up—will have an impact that goes far beyond their youth. As Nadia hides her secret from everyone, including Aubrey, her God-fearing best friend, the years move quickly. Soon, Nadia, Luke, and Aubrey are full-fledged adults and still living in debt to the choices they made that one seaside summer, caught in a love triangle they must carefully maneuver, and dogged by the constant, nagging question: What if they had chosen differently? The possibilities of the road not taken are a relentless haunt.

In entrancing, lyrical prose, The Mothers asks whether a "what if" can be more powerful than an experience itself. If, as time passes, we must always live in servitude to the decisions of our younger selves, to the communities that have parented us, and to the decisions we make that shape our lives forever.

April Book of the Month: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

Zoom Discussion Date: April 27th at 8 PM EST

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward—with hope and pain—into the future.

Black Girl, Call Home by Jasmine Mans

Zoom Discussion Date: March 30th at 8 PM EST

From spoken word poet Jasmine Mans comes an unforgettable poetry collection about race, feminism, and q***r identity.
With echoes of Gwendolyn Brooks and Sonia Sanchez, Mans writes to call herself—and us—home. Each poem explores what it means to be a daughter of Newark, and America—and the painful, joyous path to adulthood as a young, q***r Black woman.

Black Girl, Call Home is a love letter to the wandering Black girl and a vital companion to any woman on a journey to find truth, belonging, and healing.

Do you ever feel like you read a book at the perfect time? That's how I feel about Feeding the Soul. I loved reading about Tabitha's journey. She is full of so much love and positivity and I felt it throughout the entire book. I was constantly reminded that life works out exactly the way it should. Alot of the time we consider our struggles setbacks but in reality they are preparing us for the future.

One of my favorite quotes from the book was "Tell your story. You never know whose chains you'll unlock by having the courage to tell your truth, and you may even unlock your own."

This is why I created Empower Her Story and why I share my story. You never know who needs to hear it. ❤️

What was your takeaway?

If you missed the discussion last week, here are a few of the discussion questions:

✨ What gifts do you have that you're not using?

✨ What difficult situations shaped you into the person you are today?

✨ Who do you need to forgive and why?

Leave your responses in the comments 👇🏾

Feeding the Soul by Tabitha Brown

Zoom Discussion Date: February 23rd at 8 PM EST

You are seen, you are loved, and you are heard!

Before Tabitha Brown was one of the most popular personalities in the world, sharing her delicious vegan home cooking and compassionate wisdom with millions of followers across social media, she was an aspiring actress who in 2016 began struggling with undiagnosed chronic autoimmune pain. Her condition made her believe she wouldn’t live to see forty--until she started listening to what her soul and her body truly needed. Now, in this life-changing book, Tabitha shares the wisdom she gained from her own journey, showing readers how to make a life for themselves that is rooted in nonjudgmental kindness and love, both for themselves and for others.

Tabitha grounds her lessons in stories about her own life, career, faith, and family in this funny, down-to-earth book, built around the catchphrases that her fans know and love, including:

Hello There!: Why hope, joy, and clarity are so very needed

That’s Your Business: Defining yourself, and being okay with that

Have the Most Amazing Day . . . : Choosing joy and living with intention

But Don’t Go Messin’ Up No One Else’s: Learning to walk in kindness even when the world doesn’t feel kind

Like So, Like That: Living life without measurement

Very Good: Living in peace and creating good from the bad

Rich with personal stories and inspirational quotes, and sprinkled with a few easy vegan recipes, Feeding the Soul is a book to share--and to return to when you want to feel seen, loved, and heard.

December Book of the Month

Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself by

Zoom Discussion Date: December 28th at 8PM EST

Book Synopsis: End the struggle, speak up for what you need, and experience the freedom of being truly yourself.

Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them--in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean--and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no," and be assertive without offending others?

Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world. In a relatable and inclusive tone, Set Boundaries, Find Peace presents simple-yet-powerful ways to establish healthy boundaries in all aspects of life. Rooted in the latest research and best practices used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), these techniques help us identify and express our needs clearly and without apology--and unravel a root problem behind codependency, power struggles, anxiety, depression, burnout, and more.
