Japan just heard a disturbing story from a Uyghur man who says he was forced from a Chinese factory into a Cambodian scam operation.

But when he prepared to tell that story publicly, he never appeared.

According to Kyodo News, the 30-year-old man is from Kashgar in Xinjiang, and the Japan Uyghur Association says local officials pressured him to join a “labor transfer” program in December 2021.

He was sent to a meat-processing factory in Suzhou, where he says he worked more than 12 hours a day without even signing a contract.

The association says he ultimately spent about two years and three months working without pay.

His ordeal allegedly did not end in China.

According to the association, he was later sent to Cambodia and forced to participate in an investment scam operation.

The association describes what happened as effectively being “resold” into another forced-labor system.

He was scheduled to appear online at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday, using his real name and showing his face.

Then Chinese police allegedly pressured his mother, who remains in China.

He canceled his appearance.

The story raises a chilling question: if the allegations are false, why would speaking about them put pressure on his family back in China?

The arrest of Zhang Yi after he showed a photograph of the Dalai Lama while visiting a monastery is a chilling reminder of how far the Chinese authorities will go to police the peaceful exercise of human rights.

This case bears all the hallmarks of the Chinese authorities’ long-standing misuse of the offence of ‘inciting separatism’ to criminalize peaceful expression in Tibetan areas and in relation to Tibetan history, culture and religious belief.

Displaying a photograph of a religious leader should never be treated as a threat to national security.

The Chinese authorities must immediately release Zhang Yi as he has been detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights.
