Still thinking about the conversations and connections from hearing speak at the New England Aquarium’s Lowell Lecture Series last month! ✨🌊

Wawa spoke with such honesty, grace, and intention. It was powerful to hear the Founder and Executive Director of speak candidly about the realities and challenges within environmental spaces, while also reminding us how essential it is for us to continue showing up, leading, and taking up space in this work.

Scroll through to read some of our favorite quotes from the evening!

We know everyone in the room left feeling grateful for the opportunity to hear Wawa’s insights, share space in community, and be part of such a meaningful evening. From networking and laughter to thoughtful dialogue, this one was truly special to see 💙

Boston’s climate future is being shaped right now — and your voices are needed in the room 🌊✨

Join BHWOCC for our May Monthly Meet-Up, an inspiring and interactive evening where BHWOCC members like you – the experts, the storytellers, the ones whose neighborhoods and daily lives are impacted most by the effects of climate change in our city– lead the way on waterfront resilience, climate planning, and community-powered solutions.

Together, we’ll get an exclusive briefing from the Climate Resilience Team, and explore the future of Boston’s waterfront through conversations around the Boston Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Study — a major partnership between the City of Boston and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to protect neighborhoods from coastal flooding and climate impacts.

This is not just a presentation — it’s a call to action!

We are so proud to honor Janelle Pocowatchit as this month’s BHWOCC Member Spotlight and a 2026 Boston Harbor Hero! 🎉

Since our partnership began with the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB), Janelle has been a steadfast force in the Save the Harbor community and beyond. A BHWOCC member since 2023, Janelle has brought warmth, care, and deep community commitment into every space she enters. From collaborating on monthly meet-ups to sharing and uplifting her Native heritage, she has been a meaningful and grounding presence within our coalition.

As the Arts and Wellness Coordinator at NAICOB and a longtime advocate for Indigenous families and community access, Janelle’s work reflects the same care and generosity she brings to BHWOCC. In her own words:

“Everywhere I go, I talk about this amazing group of women coming together, bringing their expertise through education, family, fun, and enjoying each other’s company.

I have been to so many groups, and there is nothing like BHWOCC. I can go on and on all day about what BHWOCC means to me. This is my life, my pride, and my joy. The love I have for these women and the work each of these women do is incredible […]

To each and every one of the BHWOCC women: you are all amazing and dear to my heart. I learn from each and every one of you, whether through education, going to new meet-ups, or learning something new.

I have been in this field for over 30 years. I hope the impact I have had has helped so many families, as I have always been a single mom, and I know what it’s like being on the opposite side of the table, asking for help. As a welfare mom, a Section 8 mom, and a broke mom, I worked so hard to get where I am now.

My advice is: never give up. Never let anyone stop you from doing what you want to do. Never take no for an answer — keep going. I was told I would always be a street educator, and at first I was annoyed, but I’d rather be a street educator. You learn so much from families that you can’t get from books.

Thank you for the amazing three years with this phenomenal group of women who taught me the color of love through honesty and courage.
Wel’lalin (thank you).” 💛

Our second annual Earth Day panel, “Women of Color Emerging Leaders in the Environment,” was a powerful reminder of why these spaces matter 🌿

We came together to elevate women of color as leaders in green and blue spaces, and the room reflected exactly that: care, courage, connection, and real emerging leadership in action. We’re so proud of BHWOCC members, , .ss, , and , who stepped into their power as panelists, sharing their stories, wisdom, and lived experiences so generously; all bringing unique perspectives and insights from their various fields.

And huge gratitude to our incredible moderator for holding the space with such warmth, depth, and intention.

This is what BHWOCC is about: building community, honoring expertise, and creating spaces where women of color can lead fully at every stage of their careers. Thank you to everyone who showed up and helped make the night what it was. Here’s to continuing to grow, lead, and claim our places together♥️

From the coast, to gardens, islands, and beyond—our members love being outside and soaking in all the good things Earth has to offer 🌎

One of our core values is Love of Nature, and it definitely shows up in the way we gather, connect, and find joy in the spaces around us.

As we celebrate Earth Day, we’re reflecting on moments from across the years and the places that continue to bring us grounding and connection.

Where’s your favorite place to spend time in nature? 💚
