🌱 Hilce is determined to do something fewer than 1% of people in her community ever achieve: attend university.

As a high school senior at Colegio Horizontes, she's preparing for university entrance exams and applying for scholarships to pursue her dream of becoming a Chemical Engineer. After college, she plans to return to Chajul and inspire other young women to follow in her footsteps.

"To me, community leadership is leading by example as a woman in Chajul," she says. "If I become an engineer, I would be breaking stereotypes and demonstrating what is possible for other women."

In a world that can often feel discouraging or beyond our control, investing in students like Hilce is a tangible way to be part of something hopeful, constructive, and lasting.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 🌎✨

Today, the students and staff of Colegio Horizontes celebrated with a morning assembly with interactive cultural learning stations. Students taught one another about different Maya cultures, traditions, languages, foods, and customs represented within their own communities throughout the Ixil region and the state of Quiche.

By creating spaces where students can celebrate their heritage, learn from one another, and grow as leaders, we help build a future grounded in respect, resilience, and opportunity.

Every conversation shared across cultures, every language preserved, and every young person empowered to embrace their identity contributes to stronger communities and meaningful social change.

Last week, our Colegio Horizontes community came together to celebrate Family Day in lieu of Mother's Day❤️

This year’s celebration was especially meaningful because it marked the first time we hosted Family Day with a fully enrolled middle and high school at Colegio Horizontes. Looking around at hundreds of students, family members, mentors, teachers, staff, and community members gathered together was a powerful reminder of just how much the Limitless Horizons Ixil family has grown over the past several years.

Throughout the morning, students and families shared storytelling, poetry, performances, games, raffles, music, and reflections on the importance of family through a Maya Ixil cultural lens. From choreography and mimes to contests, every activity was designed to strengthen connection, joy, and belonging.

At Colegio Horizontes, we know education is strongest when families and communities are part of the journey. Family Day reminded us that learning does not happen in isolation — it grows through relationships, shared experiences, cultural identity, and collective care.

Our 2026 Abriendo Horizontes (Expanding Horizons) prep program is officially underway!

Over the past several weeks, staff, members of our mentorship team, and current Colegio Horizontes students, visited Chajul's public elementary schools to ensure that local 6th grade students and their families know about the opportunity to study middle and high school at Colegio Horizontes and feel encouraged to apply.

Now, prospective prep program candidates are taking the next steps in the selection process by writing letters about who they are, their dreams for the future, and why they hope to attend Colegio Horizontes. This week, students will participate in diagnostic testing, followed by home visits with families as our team continues getting to know each student and their support system more deeply.

Abriendo Horizontes (Expanding Horizons) is our middle school prep program that helps students build the academic, Spanish-language, and life skills needed to succeed in middle and high school at Colegio Horizontes. Through more than 140 hours of classes focused on math, Spanish, and school culture, students strengthen foundational skills, adjust to a full day of learning, and gain confidence for their transition to our full-day middle school. The program also engages families through workshops that encourage strong support for each child’s education and long-term success.

As part of their biology course, Colegio Horizontes high school seniors are creating audiovisual materials designed to inform and raise awareness within their communities about the importance of clean water and public health.

According to a 2025 national survey carried out by Guatemala’s National Statistics Institute, 52% of the population consumes water contaminated with f***l matter.

Through projects like this, students are developing the skills and confidence to become informed leaders and advocates for change in their communities.

This is the long-term impact of investing in girls’ education: young women who not only gain knowledge, but also use it to address real challenges, spark important conversations, and contribute to a healthier, more informed future for their communities.

✨ Training the Next Generation of Local Educators ✨

This quarter, we were excited to welcome Emerging Leader Yohana Asicona as our very first Teaching Fellow—a new role designed to strengthen classroom support while creating meaningful professional pathways for Colegio Horizontes alumni.

Yohana (right), who is currently pursuing a technical degree in education, is being mentored by teacher Susana Cedillo (left) as she continues developing her skills in the classroom.

This pilot initiative reflects Limitless Horizons Ixil's commitment to investing in local talent and preparing the next generation of educators from within the community.

Looking ahead, we aim to expand the program to include up to five Teaching Fellows each year—especially for Emerging Leaders studying education and psychology—building a strong pipeline of trained graduates ready to serve as teachers and mentors at Colegio Horizontes, in Chajul, and beyond.

📚 Growing Impact at the Community Library 📚

With the addition of a third librarian last year, the Limitless Horizons Ixil Community Library team has significantly expanded STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programming. Since January, our librarians have already facilitated 14 hours of science classes and 18 hours of math classes— far outpacing this time last year.

Beyond growth in numbers, engagement is deepening through hands-on learning. From using microscopes to building models and integrating art into science lessons, students are staying curious, creative, and actively involved.

And the impact is clear:
✨ 100% of surveyed students say the library helps them be better students
✨ 96% enjoy the library and its activities
✨ 93% felt that librarians make activities engaging.
✨ 91% have made new friends and would recommend it to others

The library is more than a place to study—it’s a space for learning, connection, and community.

🌍 Honoring World Heritage Day — Living Culture in Action 🌍

World Heritage Day is a chance to reflect on the importance of preserving cultural heritage in all its forms—both tangible and living.

At Limitless Horizons Ixil, this work is ongoing. This year, our Culture Committee began implementing a more holistic Cultural Identity Strategy, with a focus on integrating Ixil culture more intentionally across all aspects of the school experience—not only in Ixil language classes or monthly assemblies, but throughout daily learning and community life.

New initiatives include monthly commemorative posts tied to cultural themes (like the ones pictured here), the incorporation of traditional music during important school moments, and activities centered around cultural slogans and shared values. The committee is also equipping teachers with resources to bring cultural content into every subject area.

And just this past Thursday, we held our monthly Cultural Heritage Day, centered on this same theme—creating space for students to actively engage with and celebrate their heritage.

World Heritage Day reminds us that culture is not only something we protect—it’s something we live, practice, and pass on every day.

Last week, Erin Treinen (Director of Development) and Cecilia Xinic (Technology Coordinator and Educator), participated in the 10th Networking Event hosted by El Directorio Guatemala in Antigua.

Across sessions focused on capacity-building and data-informed decision-making, and through a candid Team4Tech exchange on the opportunities and challenges of integrating technology, we were reminded of the value of learning alongside peer organizations.

We’re especially encouraged by the new connections formed and the potential for collaboration ahead. As always, we are grateful to be part of a network that is strengthening the social sector in Guatemala through shared learning and collective action.

Limitless Horizons Ixil has grown so much in the past five years, and this year we are celebrating reaching full enrollment in our middle and high school Colegio Horizontes: 115 students!

With so much change and growth, it was time for our online home to grow too. Our brand-new site captures our 22-year journey and celebrates our impact as of 2026. It is now easier to explore our programs, understand our impact, and feel even more connected to the students, families, and community we support.

Our "About Us" page now features a visual timeline of key milestones dating back to our founding in 2004 — a powerful reminder of how much our organization has grown from our humble beginnings. You’ll also find updated staff bios that reflect who we are today: a team that is more than two-thirds each Indigenous Maya and female, with many Limitless Horizons Ixil alumni who we are now proud to have continued their journey with us as staff.
