Boston Ujima Project

Boston Ujima Project The Boston Ujima Project is organizing neighbors, workers, business owners and investors to create a community-controlled economy in Greater Boston.

The Boston Ujima Project is an ecosystem designed to strengthen local economic control and recenter economic power in low income communities and communities of color in Boston. Ujima (oo-JEE-mah) is a Swahili word, the celebrated Kwanzaa principle for “collective work and responsibility.” Ujima inspires us to take responsibility for our communities, to see our neighbor’s problems as our own, and t

o build collective power to solve them together. Through Ujima, we are fostering a new economy based on democracy, sustainability and justice.

☀️ We invite people from different faith traditions (or any spirituality!) who are motivated by social justice to deepen our vision of economic justice, and learn about each others social justice work. Join us to build new and deepen existing individual/ communal relationships as a means of building power and connection.

Organized by the Anchor Institutions Organizing Member Team, the Interfaith Network has three principal aims:

- Promote collective work and responsibility (Ujima) for the common good.
- Expand Boston Ujima Project's own network of support.
- Advance an economy that supports Black-owned businesses in Boston and that is rooted in values of solidarity.

Gather with us next week for a rich dialogue, catered in-house by Nubian Markets!

🌎 Last month, Ujima had the opportunity to table at Wake Up the Earth in Jamaica Plain!

The first Wake Up the Earth took place in 1979. It was a celebration of the land and community that fought for the South-West Corridor to not turn into a highway, but be used for community. The festival continues to bring together neighbors, community members, grassroots organizations, cultural workers and many more to remind us that another Boston can always be made possible!

We are so grateful to continue to table and see our members, supporters, and those curious about the work we do! And special thanks to the volunteers that held it down!

Recently Ujima and BNN co-hosted Making My First Demo, led by Dominic "Diggity Dom" Glaude, a hands-on workshop series where musicians learn the basics of recording and producing their first demo.

Boston Neighborhood Network is a nationally recognized, award-winning community media center and 501(c)(3) nonprofit that acts as a forum for all Boston residents, nonprofit and community-based organizations, governmental and educational institutions, providing them with affordable media training, access to emerging media technologies and distribution. BNN is a landmark institution built by and for the community. Their members, partners, supporters, guests, and our channels' programming represent the diversity of our city.

New releases from Ujima Press. Earlier this month, we launched two new publications. Available next month at the We Create the World Zine Fair and coming soon to our online store.

Rooted in our belief that economic democracy is both a material and cultural project, these publications document conversations, ideas, and practices emerging from the people we work alongside.

🪙 Join us for Ujima Cafe at Nubian Markets. Part social hour, part open office, we host these gatherings in collaboration with business and community members.

In this edition of Ujima Cafe, we will be co-hosting with Ujima's Coalition, Policy and Grassroots Organizing (CPGO) team. Join us for the launch of CPGO's Penny University! Ujima's Penny University is a space where people come together to build our collective understanding of political, social, and community issues through respectful discussion in a caring environment.

In centuries past, coffeehouses were hot spots for robust political discussions. For the penny that a coffee cost, one could receive a political education through conversation with one's peers, leading cafes to be nicknamed "penny universities." Ujima's CPGO member team invites you to join in the tradition of conversation over coffee at the first Ujima Penny University!
