💪🏽 Daughter of the Light-Footed People: The Story of Indigenous Marathon Champion Lorena Ramírez by . Illustrated by .

We’re celebrating Indigenous stories this month! And this is an incredible one. Lorena Ramírez is an Indigenous Rarámuri athlete from Mexico who wins ultramarathons (that’s 60 miles at a time) wearing traditional skirts and no sneakers but instead slippers made of tire rubber. This inspiring story had our kids in awe of the power of perseverance.

This is our November book pick for 3-6 y.o.’s.

Let’s not forget the rich history and heritage of our land as we look to celebrate with loved ones later on this week.

❄️ We often think of winter as a time of darkness. But there are moments in this season when because of the work of the moon or the stars or the seas, “the whole world sparkles.”

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, come discover this beautiful book (in imagery and narrative) by Tlingit author about a the wonder of winter—for light cannot exist without the darkness.

The story takes place in Alaska—a girl comforts her cousin by telling a magical tale.

🌸 Today is Holi, which celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. It’s one of my favorite holidays from when I was a kid belonging to two cultures—now also quickly becoming my own children’s favorite days of the year. To commemorate, I thought I’d share the book we used to introduce Holi to them.

☀️ This book is part of a beloved series that celebrates and showcases Indian culture with siblings Maya, Neel, and their little squirrel friend Chintu. Here, the three visit India and learn all about the origins of Holi, how to celebrate it, a little bit of its geographical divergences, and what to eat!

🌈 It’s a great book for young readers to pick up on the basics of the holiday and also give people like me a bit of nostalgia for being a kid during this fun celebration.

🌹 This title will teach you that everybody is a friend on Holi, and you’ll love spraying colorful water and powder on all your neighbors to commemorate the change in seasons and the end to a cold, gray winter. If you can, eat some jilebi, make a 🔥 bonfire, and put on some Holi Bollywood tracks, too!

🌺 Happy Holi! Or as they say in India, Holi Hai!
