Can neighborhood associations help make communities more affordable and inclusive?

Too often these groups are a small minority working against the interests of the majority, so we wrote up a guide to make them better! Here are some highlights:

- Researchers at BU found that participants in land use politics skew towards older, whiter homeowners. Just because a forum is open to the public doesn't make it representative! Know potential blind spots by comparing statistics to the overall population.

- Use the Census's American Community Survey to go beyond gender, race, and age to look at income, housing tenancy (rent vs. own), vehicle availability, housing cost burden, household size, and language stats down to the block group level.

- Decisions are often made case-by-case by the majority of those who happen to attend. Consider a more holistic approach that works towards a shared future vision. Which parts of your neighborhood should be preserved vs. change and evolve over time?

- Supplement your membership's lived experiences by leveraging outside reports and data. If you're in Boston, City of Boston publishes a great open data set of issues reported via 311.

- A process that's unclear, unpredictable, subject to discretion, and overly complex undermines political legitimacy. Develop a standardized evaluation rubric that even new members could use to judge development proposals

Which of these strategies are your favorite? What else would you recommend to forward-looking neighborhood associations? Let us know below 👇

Neighborhood associations play a critical role in shaping a community both tangibly (buildings, businesses, sidewalks, etc.) and intangibly (safety, public services, sense of community, etc.). Here are 3 strategies to start improving your local neighborhood association, distilled from our work at Pe...

What is the meaning of home and how do we tap into our own stories to both build community and help drive our advocacy around housing?

Our lived experiences in housing are just as important as the technical experience we bring to our housing advocacy.

A home is so much more than a physical place- a home provides refuge, stability, the facilitation of connection, and access to opportunities. In this social creative arts event, participants will explore what home means to them through creative writing/art prompts.

Participants will hone and share their stories of home as it relates to their activism and also leave with resources/tools to bring arts as activism techniques into their own activism and pro-housing group.

Today's our day! Let's solve the , together

Last month, The Boston Foundation released its annual Greater Boston Housing Report Card, telling an all-too-familiar story amidst the growing national housing affordability crisis: too few homes are being produced to keep up with growing demand and those that are built don’t serve the people who ...
