Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light The Light of Love. The Power to Change.

We are Massachusetts people of faith acting for climate justice: by prayer & worship, by conserving energy & using renewable sources, and by mobilizing to win the policy changes the crisis demands.

⚡ Want to do something for the climate that goes further than you'd expect? Show up for batteries.

Join us and our friends at Greenlight Action for a lunch-hour webinar on battery storage for the grid. Battery projects need local champions—and when neighbors say "yes, build it here," it unlocks the reliable, round-the-clock clean energy that makes the whole grid work.

We'll cover how long-duration battery storage works, how it answers questions of reliability and safety, how it fits into Massachusetts' clean energy goals, the environmental and justice dimensions, and how your voice at the local level can have an outsized impact for the climate.

Want to make a difference for the climate? Call your State Senator.

Right now, you have a real chance to protect one of Massachusetts' most effective climate tools, and it will take less than 10 minutes.

We're asking everyone to contact their Massachusetts Senators and tell them to reject the proposed $1B cut to Mass Save.

MassIPL was honored to co-sponsor a visit to Cape Cod yesterday by Gopal Patel. Gopal is a Hindu environmental leader, UN consultant, and one of today's most compelling faith-climate voices.

Rev. Michael Reed and Rev. Dr. Kristen L. Harper joined Gopal for an interfaith panel on why faith communities are essential to addressing the climate crisis.

"What the Ganges teaches us is that everyone should feel welcome — that we should create the space for everyone to feel that they have a contribution to make. No contribution is too small. No person is too fallen. Like the river, we should not turn anyone away." — Gopal Patel

We are grateful to the Faith Communities Environmental Network and the Unitarian Church of Barnstable for hosting, and to everyone who joined us!

We're delighted to introduce Joy Yamagiwa, who is joining Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light as our new Communications & Outreach Coordinator.

Joy comes to us after a long search that drew a remarkable group of applicants — people of deep faith, real climate experience, and serious creative talent. Choosing among them was genuinely hard. Joy stood out for her strong design skills, her clear writing, and her years at Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the City of Boston helping people connect with clean energy programs across the state.

At MassCEC, Joy spent the past two years making complex energy programs understandable and accessible to everyday residents. Before that she led communications for Boston's District 7. She starts next week and will jump right in — improving how we communicate with congregations, donors, funders, and event participants, and helping us live into the relationships at the heart of our faith and climate coalition.

Here's a note from Joy:

"Hi everyone! My name is Joy Yamagiwa, and I'll be joining the Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light team as the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, where I'll combine my passion for climate action with storytelling and community engagement. I've previously worked in clean energy and public-sector communications with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the City of Boston, helping connect people to resources, events, and ideas that make a real impact.

"I care deeply about making climate work feel accessible, hopeful, and rooted in community. I'm especially excited to work alongside faith and grassroots communities to help turn climate concern into collective action and lasting change."

Please join us in giving Joy a warm welcome. You'll be hearing more from her soon!

Did you know that renewable sources of energy - like wind and solar - are projected to save you more money on your electricity bill? Northeastern states like Massachusetts have been seeing higher energy bills, and it's partly due to our dependence on gas for energy. Thank you Arcadia Center for compiling this great fact sheet! More info in the comments.

Few things are as lovely as a tree.

And yet, if you look around the streets of Lawrence, MA — or plug in one of its zip codes on a digital "tree equity map" — you'll quickly realize there aren't nearly enough, a stark indicator of the climate resilience of an entire community.

Environmental justice starts from a simple recognition: a changing climate affects everyone, but it doesn't affect everyone equally. The communities hit first and worst are often the ones that have contributed the least and have the fewest resources for resilience. Lawrence is one of those places — and it's where MassIPL is putting environmental justice work into practice.

"It was the perfect blend of nature, spirituality, and personal connection."

This past Saturday, we laced up our boots and headed into the woods for A Walk on the Wild Side — a guided meditation hike at Julia Bird Reservation in Ipswich, MA. Our thanks to the participants who joined us for an interfaith experience in nature, guided by the wisdom of mystic and naturalist John Muir.

Muir wrote: "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe..." We believe that the interconnection of all things grounds and guides our work for environmental action.

Huge thanks to our partners at North Shore SING and Ipswich River Watershed Association, and to our hike guide Kent Harrop for leading the way!
