Sharing opposition to amended 766 Summer st proposal. * amended version removed the affordable housing element and potentially moves it off site to a

Subject: 776 Sumer St Phase 2- Opposition to Removal of Onsite Affordable Housing

Dear neighbors,

Please note the comment period for Phase 2 of the 776 Summer Street development in South Boston ends next Thursday, February 20th. I strongly encourage my neighbors to please submit your comments here or email [email protected].

https://www.bostonplans.org/projects/development-projects/776-summer-street-phase-2 .

Please note I have joined my neighbors and expressed opposition to moving approximately 100 affordable housing units associated with the project off-site. My office and I have echoed the concerns of our residents, both at the public meeting and with the development team, that I do not support a contribution to the city’s Inclusionary Development Policy (IDP) affordable housing fund that would potentially result in approximately 100 affordable housing units sent outside of the impacted area and South Boston.

Moreover, in such a densely populated neighborhood here in South Boston, there is only so much land that can sustain this scale of development and 100 affordable housing units, while similar sized projects will already have their own IDP affordable housing requirements to meet. With our affordable housing crisis, I do not want to see a situation where this community benefit, and approximately 100 IDP units, are transferred outside of the impacted neighborhood of South Boston.

Please spread the word to your family, friends and neighbors to submit their concerns to the Boston Planning Department by Thursday, February 20th.

Thank you,
Ed

URGENT REQUEST
South Boston Residents, hoping for your support to oppose this project. Please consider sending to friends, family, neighbors in South Boston asking they do the same.
Sincerely,
IAG MEMBERS:

“ARE YOU A RESIDENT OF SOUTH BOSTON? DO YOU STRUGGLE TO FIND PARKING? DO YOUR GUESTS VISITING, ROOMMATES, PEOPLE DOING WORK ON YOUR HOUSE/CONDO? IS IT DIFFICULT TO FIND PARKING AT SB BUSINESSES YOU PATRONIZE?

IF YOU ARE A RESIDENT OF SOUTH BOSTON AND ANSWER YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONSIDER SENDING A LETTER OPPOSING A CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL FOR A NINE STORY BUILDING - 70 RESIDENTIAL RENTAL UNITS (103 BEDROOMS) – COMMERCIAL ON GROUND FLOOR – NO PARKING FOR VEHICLES!!! There are 85 bike parking spots.

We ask our City Planning Department and elected officials:

Where will these residents park in a neighborhood that has a parking crisis?
Where will their family and friends that visit park?
Where will the commercial/retail staff and customers park?
How does this building get access by the many vehicles needed to support the building and the residents living there?
Like: cleaning and services for the building, deliveries, rideshares, moving in/out, etc.

What is the impact to the surrounding neighborhood and businesses that already struggle with parking?
And finally - how can the new city planning department make recommendations and endorsements on this, and other development plans, IGNORING the zoning in place to protect residents and their quality of life? They are endorsing proposals before plans go to community.
LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND THE ANSWER IS: THIS BUILDING DOES NOT BELONG IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

PLEASE CONSIDER SENDING A LETTER OF OPPOSITION FOR THIS PROPOSAL AT 49-51 “D” STREET – SOUTH BOSTON TO THE FOLLOWING (please remember to include the address of the project and sign your name and address):

City Planner for this project: [email protected]
SB City Councilor: [email protected]
Councilor Flynn’s chief of staff: [email protected]
ONS Mayor’s Liaison for SB: [email protected]
Senator Nick Collins and Chief of Staff: nick.collins@state@masenate.gov and [email protected]
Representative Biele and Legislative Aide: [email protected] and [email protected]

WE RESPECFULLY CALL ON THE MAYOR AND CITY PLANNING DEPARTMENT TO ADDRESS OUR PARKING CRISIS IN SOUTH BOSTON – NOT ESCALATE IT!! WE NEED “COMMUNITY LED DEVELOPMENT” not “PLANNING BY DEVELOPMENT”.

IF YOU ALREADY SENT A LETTER OF OPPOSITION, THANK YOU!

Dear neighbors,

I'm writing today to inform you that a critically important Community Meeting scheduled for Monday, January 29, 2024 at 6pm for the proposed American Care Urgent Care at 457-469A West Broadway has been POSTPONED, and we will provide further updates when it has been rescheduled.

In my opinion, a proposal to place a for profit health care clinic less than a block away from the South Boston Community Health Center (SBCHC) would have a devastating impact on both the financial stability of this vital nonprofit institution, as well as the public health for the people of South Boston.

Please note that the South Boston Elected Officials and I are unequivocally against this proposal. We are respectfully requesting that, when this information becomes available, our neighbors and community organizations spread the word to friends and family to join us in opposition at both the community meeting, and later at the City of Boston Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA), to help us protect public health in South Boston and ensure that no services, staff, or programs are jeopardized at the SBCHC.

The SBCHC has been a staple in our community for generations, and serves a large population that includes neighbors across all parts of South Boston- including our seniors, persons with disabilities, and our most vulnerable in public housing at the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) West Broadway Development, the Anne M. Lynch Homes at Old Colony, Mary Ellen McCormack, the West Ninth Street Apartments, the Foley Apartments on H Street, and Monsignor Powers Apartments on L Street.

Over the past five decades, it has been at the forefront of serving our community and putting our residents’ health care needs first - including over 70,000 service visits a year. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the SBCHC was also the first community health center in Suffolk County to provide vaccines for the public, our seniors and most vulnerable, delivering over 35,000. As always, their staff demonstrated their outstanding professionalism and provided their customary high quality health care.

It is critical that our neighborhood comes together at this upcoming Community Meeting and shares both our serious concerns about this proposed for-profit urgent care, and to show our support for the South Boston Community Health Center and their staff.

I will continue to keep you updated on the details of this Community Meeting.

Thank you,
Ed

Cityside will be meeting on Monday, January 22, at 6:30pm, at the Boys and Girls Club.

We have the following two presentations, and one update;

270 Dorchester Avenue This is the large scale development proposed for the old Chuck and Ann’s site and beyond. The project has been approved by the BPDA but the proponent has filed a notice of project change, mainly for design changes.

Although this development is located within the West Broadway Neighborhood Association (WBNA), it closely borders Cityside’s boundaries, and many residents felt this project was too large and shadowed the D Street Development residents immediately behind it. It also did not include enough parking. It was supported by WBNA and was approved after many changes and different owners. Our State Representative, David Biele, who is always looking out for us, has asked the proponents to also present the current design change proposal to Cityside.

Current BPDA Project Description - New 6-story building consisting of 114 residential rental units, including approximately 4300 square feet of commercial space and an underground parking garage with space to park up to 20 vehicles. Twenty units will be IDP rental units.

185 E Street Project Description - demolish existing building, combine parcels 523 526 amp 527. Erect new 4 story unit residential with side balconies 6 car garage 2 on grade parking as per plans submitted. ZBA Hearing scheduled: 2/27/24

Update: 189 West 5th Street (by the secretary) After presenting to Cityside the proponent agreed to redesign the facade of the proposed structure (formerly an abutter’s lot) and also the adjacent existing structure. The before and after proposed designs are attached.

A ZBA Hearing is scheduled for 2-27-24. Project Description; Erect new four story residential building with three units two parking spaces.

We will also have a report on any trees proponent is planning to remove.

Sister Mary Veronica Park No news to report on the park but we are very hopeful that our electeds, working with the Archdiocese, will come up with a plan to save the park.

Thanks everyone and hope to see you all Monday!

Below is a message from the organizing committee for the Monsignor Thomas J. McDonnell and Frank Kelly Annual Thanksgiving Dinner looking for volunteers.

————
As we approach the season of gratitude and reflection, We are reaching out to our vibrant community with an invitation to join hands and hearts in continuing a longstanding tradition of service. The Monsignor Thomas J. McDonnell and Frank Kelley Annual Thanksgiving Dinner has been a beacon of hope and compassion for almost 50 years, and we are thrilled to announce its return to delivering hundreds of meals to our neighbors in need on Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving, a day synonymous with warmth, togetherness, and gratitude, provides us with the opportunity to extend a helping hand to those who may find themselves alone or unable to prepare a meal. On Thursday, November 23rd, we will be delivering hundreds of Thanksgiving meals to homes across our community.

To ensure the success of this meaningful event, we are in need of dedicated volunteers like you. Your presence and support are crucial, and we have various roles available to accommodate your preferences. Volunteer roles include:

Plating and Packaging Meals: Help prepare the meals for delivery by assisting with plating and packaging. Your attention to detail ensures that each meal is a warm and comforting experience.
Delivering Meals: Join our team of delivery volunteers to bring the Thanksgiving spirit directly to the doorsteps of those in need. A simple act of delivering a meal can make a significant impact on someone's day.
Cleanup After Service: After the deliveries are complete, lend a hand in cleaning up and ensuring that the event space is left in excellent condition. Your efforts will contribute to a smooth conclusion of our Thanksgiving service.
Here are the details for the day:

Date: Thursday, November 23rd
Location: St. Monica’s Church 331 Old Colony Avenue, South Boston
Arrival Time: 9:00 AM
Start Time: 9:30 AM (Plating and Packaging, Deliveries)
Cleanup: After the deliveries are complete
Your participation in any of these roles will play a vital role in serving those in need of a Thanksgiving meal. Now, more than ever, our community needs volunteers to help us bring the warmth of Thanksgiving to every doorstep.

If you are able to lend a helping hand in any of these capacities, please confirm your availability via email. You can reach out to Dan Manning at [email protected] for further details or to confirm your participation.

Let us come together as a community, share the spirit of Thanksgiving, and make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. Your generosity and commitment to service will undoubtedly make this Thanksgiving memorable for all.

Thank you for considering this opportunity, and we look forward to celebrating the season of gratitude with you.

Warm regards,

The organizing committee
